I mentioned about half a year ago somewhere on HGF that I was going to try to revive Homegrown or at-least help the groups out. Now I know alot of groups dont film anymore, which is understandable as who wants to put their life in danger for no real return. But I want to try and get you guys a return on your footage, whether its just old footage you have or new footage etc. I would like to get to a position that HG groups are receiving both recognition and money from their footage, without being portrayed in a bad light or have bullshit voice over artists and websites lie about who you are and how the 'footage' came about. (Anyone who has sold clips to tv shows will know what I mean)
So anyway I have devised a plan to make this happen, and believe that with your guys support it will.
When trying to get the Chrissie and Dex show underwritten by GoDaddy, I also pitched them the idea of 'Homegrown tv'. Quite simply a weekly show with a presenter showing homegrown clips and so on.
Now unfortunately due to the economy, neither show has been underwritten, but they have offered me discount codes to put into the shows to generate abit of revenue if I so wish to carry on and make them.
Well Chrissie and Dex SHow is out of the equation, as it cant be made without money to cover production costs, as the revenue made from discount codes isnt great so I would end up loosing money.
I also decided to bury the idea of HGTV as my hopes were to have money to actually hire a proper presenter and pay individual groups for exclusive clips. And of-course without money, this isnt possible.
But I have come up with a different approach to this, which I think could greatly benefit HG groups and potentially earn them some money.
The plan would be to bring out a weekly show (HGTV) which would be put on both youtube and Mevio. As some of you know I have contacts at Mevio and therefore know that every new episode would be featured on the daily home page video which recieves over half a millions hits a day, so it will be seen by alot of people and companies.
Then depending on the response it gets, which I'm hoping would be positive. Build up a fan base and hopefully within 8 months of the show running I would reformat the material that was shown so far, and film a presenter properly with a budget (id have to self fund this) to develop a broadcast pilot to present to tv channels, to try to get a tv show either commissioned or licensed, and obviously use the strength and viewing figures from the webisodes to help achieve this.
Up until recently this wasn't very possible. But I now know several commissioning editors and a few people that own different sky channels, and am very confident that I can get the pilot in front them. You might be asking, 'why not just do the tv pilot now instead of doing the web series first' and the very simple answer is that they need to believe that the product can be made to a high quality and that people will watch it. I believe making the webisodes is the best way to do that, as I know how difficult it is to get any show commissioned these days.
If a tv show was made, there would also be the opportunity for it to also come out of dvd and generate more revenue from that. Obviously I cant say what channel it would be or what kind of deal could be got, but either way I would aim for it to be licensed and broadcast internationally and not just in the UK.
Sorry about the length of what I'm writing, just trying to explain in as much detail as possible and be as upfront and honest as I can, because assholes like Moody have come here talking shit and promising things they cant live up to.
So heres the dealio. Theres no money in the webisodes, but if they are good, they will be viewed by millions and you guys will have your websites and group names plugged for each individual clip, so you might end up having other tv shows contact you to purchase clips etc.
This goes for me aswell. I wont earn any money from the webisodes, I will probably loose money. I will include these discount codes, and hope that within 5 months they start to cover the cost of me making the episodes, but odds are I wont financially gain from it in the slightest as I will have to basically make the whole show myself to keep costs low, and for everyday I work on this I loose out on making money working on something else.
But If the webisodes are successful there is money to be made in the tv shows. Obviously I would pay you guys for your footage, and would probably have a featured stunt group in every show where you guys are interviewed and so on. I'm not going to lie to you and say theres loads of money in tv shows, because that is a common misconception, but there is money and I will aim to get you guys as much as is possible.
So I need to know who out of you are interested? I would like to start developing the webisodes and collecting footage, for the first episode to be released around september time, but need to be sure that I have enough groups behind me to give me footage or its just a waist of my time etc.
Like I said, I wont be able to pay you for clips, so save any unreleased exclusive shit for tv shows etc, but I just need clips that you guys have released before, or that are on other websites etc But they do have to be good stand alone clips. I'm happy to show also show mixups, trailers for your own dvds or pretty much anything you guys want to show, aslong as its entertaining and HG related. But the main thing is stand alone stunts around a 30-60 seconds long, with a build up, and the aftermath/reaction.
Whether you guys do or dont film anymore, it's time to step up our game and not waste all the hours weve spent filming footage. We need to put our footage to good use and make some fucking money out of it. And if enough people are up for it, and stand behind me in this project, I promise it will lead to something.
Let me know what you guys think, and if you have any questions.
Email address to email clips to is [email address redacted]. As high quality as possible and preferably 16:9 but it doesnt matter too much. Cant except wmv. Has to be avi or mov etc.
Cheers guys.
Sounds good dude.
