Gman/Chorus.

Ive got a tub of creatin back from a couple of years ago and was just wondering if I'd benefit from taking it, and if so how should I and what does it do exactly? Also would I benefit from whey protein? Im abit hesitant about the protein as Im worried it will just make me fatter.

Dex. Creatine(monohydrate) will give you more energy for your muscles to work with... meaning you can do longer sets and so forth. so yeah def. use creatine.

Protein wont make you fat. It's the carbs!

So take 1-3 protein shakes a day and 5-10grams of creatine each day. (if youre working out)

edit: oh, and Creatine Pyruvate is better than the normal creatine. Better effect and safer. max powah max endurance

So If I had protein shakes but didnt work out that day it wouldnt be stored as fat?

Well I doubt Ill take 3 protein shakes a day, but presume I have one. When should I take them? Before I work out? directly afterwards?

And when should I have the creatine? before work out? afterwards? on the box it says take 4 times a day for abit, and then take once a day for eleven weeks or something.

How exactly does the whey protein work aswell?

Basially the way food works simply:

Protein - Repairs muscle cells damaged during training.

Carbohydrate - Stored as glycogen on the walls of the liver and in the muscle cells as a ready source of energy.

If you eat too much of either of these and there isn't sufficient space to store them the body converts them to make them easier to store.

If you have too much protein some is converted in carbohydrates and if you have too much carbohydrate it get stored as subcutaneous fat. For survival this is brilliant but obviously not for remaining lean.

So say if you did take too much protein, the likelyhood is that it'll be stored as carbohydrates and you won't see a massive net fat gain.

Our conditioning coach said no matter what you eat make sure you eat protein, because you'll repair your muscle cells resulting in a gain in muscle size as an adaptation to training. But you gotta take carbohydrates on too to make sure that as much of the protein is taken up and not stored as glycogen.

In terms of a ratio of carb:protein intake I'm currently rewritting an article to make it simple for new trainers and I'll be posting that on the website when G sets it up.

CREATINE

In terms of the creatine I'd recommend taking it but here's some tips on how to get the most out of it:

- Take it with grape juice

You only need to take it with a small serving of grape juice (half pint at the most). The reason for taking it with this is because it's high glycemic and means the creatine will get taken up maximally and quickly

- Drink a lot more water

Creatine causes the cells to take on more water which will result in a bit more of a pumped look. But you have to pretty much double your water intake too (6-8 litres a day ideally). Make sure you don't just drink water though because it will flush out your system completely. Have an isotonic drink through the day too the make sure this doesn't happen.

- Cycle it

Like it says on the tub for the first few days I'd take it four times a day at regular intervals. After that you can take it just after training and before if you wish.

Creatine works as an aid to recovery when training anaerobically so yeah it does mean you'll recover from sets quicker and be able to get a few more reps out hopefully resulting in a net strength gain.

Hope that helps.

dodge ftw.

dodge what is your take on Creatine Pyruvate? I heard it doesnt store water => no need to drink as much water/fluids.

I honestly hadn't heard of a different from that didn't so I wouldn't be able to say anything about it mate, I assume you don't get the same cell volumising effects of the normal one and its simply for recovery? Sorry mate no idea haha.

Yeh man thats really helpful. Just one thing, whens the best time to drink the protein shake? after the workout?

And G, is the site def gonna happen?

Yeah, Im also writing something up about supplementation during and after training too.

Basically you wanna get some carbs and protein in as fast as possible after training. Different shakes are more slowly digested than others, you want something that is very quick release. The best post workout shake I've ever used and seen is call optimum recovery plus.

More details on it here http://www.pacificnutrition.co.uk/products...ryPlusCitrusIce

You'll still benefit from taking any sort of shake with carbs and protein after training though thats just the ideal sort of thing to take. If you drink an isotonic throughout the session too like lucozade or powerade or something you get some carbs in while you're training. This is important because it prevents protein breakdown (losing muscle) and promotes protein synthesis (bigger quicker recovery) so I'd train with one of those every time you train too :D.

I'll write it all up a bit clearer and stuff for the site but that's the gist of it for now.

Any other questions?

I really got to look into what I can drink during training=what I can get here and what is cheap.

___________________________________________________________
Also on creatine pyruvate:

The creatine regenerates ATP in the muscles... like dodge said higher intensity workouts and greater endurance. Pyruvate increases endurance, 'buffers lactic acid' (?? woot) to delay muscle fatigue, and burns fat.

buuut... I read a study in which this was tried out for one week on cyclists and it didnt benefit them. But could be different for bodybuilding.

To be honest I could do with loosing a couple of inches!

creatine really is a waste of f*cking money when you're starting at fitness, when you've been at it for a while and are deadlifting and squatting heavy shit this will help you increase your reps and strength slightly and of course it will make you look more blown up but this last thing is only temporary, however it really is no use when you're starting out :S

I think a good diet and some whey shakes will do the trick for this time.

Yeah I agree that a lot of products out there are rubbish, and you will experience some loss in gains when coming off the creatine but the net gain will still be improved. But yeah its is definitly a case of getting the basics right first so you have a solid foundation to work from rather than depending on a miracle product to make you massive instantly.

As for not taking it at the start of training I'd probably disagree ok maybe for the first few weeks while he plays about with his program and works out what sort of weight he's going to be working on and getting comfortable with his form it wouldn't be necessary but I don't see any reason why he shouldn't take it when starting.

Although you could argue that the gains he's going to get will be the quickest in his ntime training a a result of it being the first time he'll train and it would be better to bring it in when he hits a plateu but I'd rather bring in a strength phase or power phase to get him over that plateu personally.
