Nah, seriously though, I hope cigarettes get taxed to oblivion. It may be the liberal democrat douchebag in me, but I am allllllll for taxing vice to pay for children's health insurance.

I'm a smoker, I smoke up to 20 a night when I am drinking.

Personally, I think the ban in bars and clubs is a good thing. It sucks when you totally reek of cigarrettes, feel ill because the entire establishment is full of smoke, your clothes reek and your eyes are puffy.

The ban makes bars and pubs feel nicer, cleaner and more pleasant. I don't mind popping outside for a cigarrette, infact it can be enjoyable at times.

Then again however, I don't tend to go to bars and clubs as much as I used to, maybe attributed to the fact I don't drink every week as I used to?

And FYI; I don't care about the fact it may "harm" children. What's so special about children? Smoking harms everyone, a child or an adult are no more or less special than each other.

Well children are still developing which means they have an increased chance of asthma and various other severe respiratory diseases which can hinder the growth of their lungs.

But whatever.

Firstly, this is a good thread because of the amount of discussion it has spawned, without a whole heap of one-line-fail-jokes.

Secondly, as an ex-smoker I think these laws are great. At first when they were introduced in Australia, I was quite against them, because I was thinking that one of my god given rights to have a cigarette was being taken away. But now that I think about it, I was pretty much only upset at the fact that I was being inconvenienced, and that's really all it boils down to.

Everyone knows smoking kills you, fair enough there may be evidence that second-hand smoke might not be as bad as it's played out to be, but in the end, no-one wants to smell like a fucking ashtray after having a good night out and no-one wants their lives shortened by breathing in all the horrible shit that cigarette smoke contains.

Most smokers have this 'high-and-mighty' attitude that they should be able to light up whenever and wherever they want to, and I should know, I've had this kind of mentality before. But, there is a time and a place for everything, smoking included, and that place is outside where the wind can carry and disperse your foul smelling, carcinogenic chemicals, rather than letting that shit linger in a small, enclosed area for the majority of the population to inhale into their unpolluted airways.

Kids are my job. I literally wake up every morning, go to a school, work with kids for 6 hours. I go to 2 hours of classes, then I go to to a Children's Home and work with kids for 2 more hours. Sorrrrrrrrrrrrrry if I care about the future of humanity.

Where have I heard that before?

Does anyone else hold the view that the world needs to toughen the fuck up? Basically, pussies have created litigation, prohibition, bans, limits etc onto the world, which in turn, create health and safety bollocks, education that has just gone down the fucking pan, and everyone worried about health and all this shit. The media realises most people are now pussies and so feed us shit non stop. The world is now worried about everything, to me, the smoking issue has nothing to do with health and passive smoking cancer etc, it's about people worried all the fucking time. I don't have this high and mighty approach to skoking, which as blargh said, is apparent, I just think it's common sense, Non smokers don't always want to smell and breathe in fags and that's fair enough, but why don't people just chill out and enjoy themselves without worrying about everything?

I see it the other way around. People are infact toughening up by taking this extra step to discourage smoking.

Nar it's just getting worried from the media. If there wasn't such a massive thing with the passive smoking stuff, noone would have said anything.

Not science, scare mongering. Science is a great thing and trying to learn and all that. It's not just smoking, if it was just a smoking ban and thats the only thing that has been going down hill it would be alright. But the same strain of people who want smoking banned everywhere, are ussually the same ones who sue if there kid falls over at school or sue if they fall over at work. It creates this society where we are smothering everyone. I had to have training to pick up an evelope at work, no shit, and then after that training, I went to put in the shelves, and had to have training on how to operate a shelf, no word of lie. And it's all this that comes from the same strain of worried people, fearing everything in the world, listening to the media too much and complaining when something doesn't go their way.
Got passive smoking from being in the pub evry night for 50 years, then maybe you shouldn't have been in the fucking pub every night for 50 years.

Edit - I guess what I'm trying to say is you can get upset about it and complain about a big media scare tactics conspiracy, or you can just go outside and smoke your cigarettes and let others be. If someone else wants to file a bunch of bogus litigation against companies for dumb reasons, I say let em'. Not my problem to worry about. If the media is controlling my mind and scaring me into believing whatever they want me to believe, I say let em'. I'm confident enough in myself that I don't worry about that kind of childish stuff anymore. So what if the media is trying to scare me? Is it that big of a threat to me? If it were, I'd be pretty fuckin' weak.

I don't usually mention any of this, im not one of these people who camplains about the news when it's on, it's just in a thread based around it. Im not one to complain about things and I let it be 99% of the time, just felt like an appropriate area to vent.

No, actually I have very valid views from a smokers point of view...Trust me I have already discussed this with those of my friends that choose to smoke. I am defending my believes, just like you are defending yours. This turned into a debate...which is fitting because I would be giving this speech in debate class.

Gents, it boils down to this. I am not doing my speech on this topic. Therefore I stated my OPINIONS on the matter. You say what you say, and I say what I say. That is thanks to the god given gift of free thought...Congratulations for exercising it. Those of you that are replying to my posts comprise a molecule of shit lodged in a piece of gum on the sidewalk that is the human race...Just like me. You can't speak for everybody so please don't try to. Things are different in various parts of the world. You all may get off to persecution of smokers, whereas I am offended by it. Tobaco is a major cash crop where I live. So the increased taxes and bans almost seem redundant. People having to travel across the state line into Virginia to catch a break on a product that is grown in their backyard is ridiculous.

With that being said...close this mother fucker? I'm tired of the rants from both sides (mine and yours included). I would gladly look up statistics to back my point, but sorry. I'm swamped with enough fucking school work as it is.

lol, I would just type out all my points against what you are sayin again, but you can just go back and re read them to see where you are wrong.

It boils down to the fact of this thing in the first place, smokers are the minority, so why should the majority suffer (and it's scientific fact that they do (it dosn't matter to what extent)) from second hand smoke, when all you have to do is go outside.
