This is my fall back topic if the HG speech falls through. I'm going to discuss the current smoking laws that ban smoking in public places and on college campuses around the globe. How do you feel? I really hope that atleast a few people share my views, seeing how I am a smoker myself. Personally, in the US, I feel like its becoming a 'witch hunt' so to speak.

I think it's freedom of choice, if it's outside there are worse pollutions in most cities.

I dunno we drink pollution too, it's all pollution were gonna get cancer some how. Just as long as it isn't ass cancer or ball cancer. Thats all I can pray for no ass or ball cancer.

I am not a smoker and I hate the smell and annoyance of people smoking around me.

But, I am not a pretentious douchebag. So, I don't see how my comfort takes precedence over someone else's rights. I think that smoking being banned in public places (restaurants that families frequent, movie theaters, etc.) should be smoke-free. Any place that children go to should be smoke free.

All of this bullshit about keeping bars and strip clubs smoke free is infringing on the rights of the private business owner. If you're in a bar, or any other place that is 18+ then you have the choice to be there, and if that means smoke is there, then you're an adult and can make that decision.

If you're in a place where children are at, though, you should not be allowed to smoke there.

pretty much agree with ray. the smoking ban put inplace last year is gay, it shouldn't have been applied to bars and pubs. at the end of the day, you go there to drink, it's not a health club.

There's a smoking ban on all public places in Ohio. I live in a unique area on the border between Ohio (non-smoking) and Kentucky (smoking) in a major city (Cincinnati).

What's so unique about this is that prior to 2004 when the smoking ban was passed in Ohio, the Newport (Kentucky's part of Cincinnati) economy was struggling financially. There was a low median income and businesses were going under.

In 2004, Ohio banned smoking in all public places. Newport still allowed smoking in all of its businesses. All of the smokers in the greater Cincinnati area inundated the Newport businesses with patronage. Newport is one of the fastest growing cities in the mid-west and it's all because of Ohio's smoking ban forcing smokers to make the (very) short trip to Newport to enjoy themselves and pump Newport's economy with mass amounts of Ohio money.

There are more than 47 million smokers in America, and they all buy things besides cigarettes. If you give a business owner the option to allow smoking or to disallow smoking, they will allow it 90% of the time. That's why you have to enforce bans on establishments that cater to patrons under 18. However, any other place is an encroachment on rights and shouldn't be tolerated by smokers. Sucks, but it's the reality.

Fayetteville has a clean air act were you can't smoke within 15 feet of any establishment.

It is statistically proven that since that law passed bars have lost profit of up to 20% a year. That is a direct target of business. Yes I am a smoker, I agree with Ray that it shouldn't be allowed where children are, but in bars and other places where you have to be 18+, it should be legal.

Smoking tobacco is pretty dumb anyways, I think its a step in the right direction. Smoking in bars and shit should be legal, but anywhere with food, get your smoke the fuck out.

Amen! I used to smoke up until two years ago, but even when I was a smoker, people smoking around me whilst I ate used to shit me up the wall.
I think it's a bit foolish initiating a smoke ban in bars etc, because smoking and drinking kinda go hand in hand.
And how come no-one has Banned those posers and rich bitches who spray like an entire can of deodorant or perfume over themselves like it's a fucking jacket... Those fuckers shit me on the whole ten times more than most smokers.

Im glad it's been banned in bars ect.

yeah it's my choice to go to a bar, and yes, it's not a health club, but why should someone else's decision to suck on a toxic drug and blow the fumes all over me effect my health?

I remember someone saying in a discussion about this before something like 'It's my decision to wank, but I don't go down the pub and do it all over people.'

At the end of the day, it's two groups of people, the majority of people don't smoke, so why shoudl hte miniority of people effect the majorities health? There's still the oppertunity to smoke, most pubs now have outside, shealterd, heated areas that you can go to so you can get your 'fix'.

The only thing that annoyed me in the pre-ban era was how your clothes smelled like shit every time you got home from a night club or a bar. I have no trouble with smokers other than that.

I'm a non smoker, always have been..

They want to bring in a £10 smoking permit! !!
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article3378895.ece

not a bad idea, it's not a huge amount and it'd stop all the non-smokers bitching about how smoker's apparently "rinse" the NHS when realistically the tax on tobacco put's in a large sum.

Haha yeah it's so rank to go to a bar sober these days when you're being bombarded with some of the nastiest farts you've ever smelled. But the cure for that is just to get drunk enough not to smell them before you go to one :)

But at least the odor of other peoples farts and sweat doesn't stick to your clothes :)

I personally think it's good, I don't like the smell or smokey pubs but if those were the only side effects of smoking then I wouldn't feel they should be banned however second hand smoke damages my health and that's something I hold pretty highly and I don't really think its fair that someone can make me less healthy against my own will.

Should be able to smoke where you fucking want, children this children that, suck my fucking balls, cars cause pollution but you wouldn't stop them driving around kids or other people. As for choice, dont give a shit, a pub is a pub, you smoke in a pub, that's the rules, who cares if your clothes stink, or you are annoyed with the smell. Get some fucking balls and deal with it, sit down, have a laugh, fuck the cancer and enjoy a nice smooth cigarette.

I'm aware I'm an ignorant bastard who's cares for noone but by own well being.
