I know there is few people who has hdv cameras, so Im asking:

If you have HDV cam, and you film in hdv, but then capture it to your computer as dv (I´ve heard you can do that) is the picture quality better than in actual minidv cameras? And have you faced any problems in editing?

Is hdv even worth getting? As you are most likely to compress the actual clip/movie to normal dvd? And by that, losing the great detail it has?

yes the picture quality is better when you capture as dv, and no problems in editing as it's dv when you capture it as that.

depends what your using it for? homegrown videos I? if for a dvd that's selling 1000s of copies yeah, for a hundred or so or just the internet dont bother. unlesss your into other film making, like more serious stuff, in which case definitely look more into it.

Ive been doing short movies and stuff like that so you could say Im into "serious" filmmaking, so Im looking more in to it.

But when you are making a dvd, you have to compress it a lot (unless you are making a hd dvd), would you lose all the benefits hdv gives you?

Any suggestions for hd camcorder models?

there a hell of alot cheaper then a good 3ccd, and they have got basicly the same fetures or better (mic jacks and such) then some 3ccd. there smaller, got a bulit in light (at least the HC3 does).

plus its in HD so its got better quaility picture.

HC3 has built in videolight? Link me to that information. But if you are going serious about filming you sure want to buy an external light for the camera.

Thats true, similar features, cheaper, smaller... and cmos gives a good battle against 3ccd.

But will HD make any difference after you export your piece of art? If you post it to internet? If you make orginal dvd from it?

Notice that it has only built in flash, no built in light.

I can go search bunch of reviews on my own, what I like to hear is your view on it, why have decided to get that over e.g. hc7 or hc1? Or over canon hv20 that is praised all over the internet?

And you didnt explain why you want HD. After all if you convert it dvd or to most of videofiles, its not HD anymore.

And even if you want HD in all its glory, you need to buy a new capturing card for it, one that has hdmi plug. And thats just for getting it to computer. After that you need to get a editing program that can handle HD. I dont know if it also needs powerfull computer to work with it. Then if you want to keep it HD and show it your friends you have to get a HD dvd burner and programs for that. Easy. And doesnt affect the weight of your wallet at all. Not to mention price of HD tapes or HD dvd´s.

edit: no HC3 doesnt have microphone jac.

Imre from TSE owns one and it has one, for sure.

this vid was shot with an HC3 with a long range mic attached.

alot of softwares will sopport HDV I have Ulead 11 and it works for it its the same as SD footage. it has a video light, it says in the video on c-net, but it is also a flash. I chose the HC3 over the HC1 because its cheaper and pretty much the same thing, exept the HC1 has a zoom ring and looks a bit more pro like. I have not done much resurch on the canon so I can say much about it. Yes the quality will be fucked when uploaded to myspace or youtube but will still look better, and if u upload to www.blip.tv I dont think it drops the quility, at least on SD video. as for the HC5 and HC7 they started cutting fetures after the HC3 to make more money.

It really doesnt have. The HC3 doesnt have mic jac. It does have a "hot shoe" where you can plug e.g. videolight or microphone. But e.g. if you plug in videolight you cant plug in microphone. And you might need to plug in video light, because hc3 doesnt have that either. It has flash, but no videolight and thats what it says on c-net as well.

Look under the features part.

I also found out that HC7 at least has plenty of good features that hc3 doesnt have.

And remember that with that hot shoe you can only use sony accesories.

The Hc1 is the best cmos consumer hdv camera to be released ever! it is slightly cripsper then the HC3(which I own, but it works for me) and just check out my vids on myspace im sure you' be able to tell what was filmed with our HC3. All hdv cams have terrible low light, a video light is highly recommended, and the wireless mics and stereo mics that attach to the hot shoe work like a dream, as for running a video light at the same time, what I would tell you to do is just get an accessory shoe adapter, with the light off to the side. the hc3 works great, but the hc1 puts out more crisper images(but only a year round professinal could tell) plus hc1 has terrible batteries....... thats my input for now.

Thanks for your input, glad to get some views from first hand user.

Yeah, I thought I´d get that shoe adapter, so I can plug in both mic and light. How did you like it? I´m bit concerned that it might make the camera bit unstable to hold as it has so much extra stuff on it, and even on the side.

You say all hdv cams have terrible low light, but what I´ve read this 1/3 cmos censor put up a good fight against 3ccd´s specially and specially against the small ones. (when it comes to low light conditions). I´ve also seen pretty good test footage of hdv cams in low light.

edit: I checked your videos and the quality did seem nice. So did the footage, dont you post videos on the forums or why have I missed tse? The beginning of promo4, nice, really nice.

I dunno im not convinced with the low light preformance, and yes a shoe adapter with a light makes it a bit unstable but nothing a little bit of muscle or tri-pod can fix. we dont use a shoe adapter to often, we just either use the wireless mic or stereo mic we got, that goes into the hot shoe. and we are just building up really good content, and I guess when they cleaned the forum out our topic was erased or w/e they did. we will be releasing good videos soon.

Want to give more details? Maybe compare to vx?

HC7 is basically better quality than a VX if filming HD, if just DV, it's about the same except the colour is alot better on the HC7 (which I suppose makes it better than the VX still  ).

Low light the VX is alot better, but I'm going to buy an infra-red mount for it so I can film loads at night, thats not to say its bad in low light, but the VX is better init.

The HC3 is better than the HC7 for low light, but the features on the HC7 are oh so much better and general filming is better. Basically it's a fucking awesome camera for the price.

Just to make sure, if you choose the HD setting over DV, and film in HD, do you need to use an HDtape? or will a DVtape work?
