"Will downloaders go to jail?"

"The European Parliament's committee for legal affairs meets today to vote on proposals for criminal penalties to be imposed on those who infringe intellectual property (IP) rights." (copyright, trademark etc)

"The more liberal MEPs have also called for copies made for personal use to be specifically excluded. Those calling for harsher penalties for infringers, including Dutch MEP Toine Manders, say they want personal copies included in the directive, up to and including downloaded files."

"Manders and his supporters also want penalties for infringement to include the seizure and destruction of all counterfeit material, and all equipment used to carry out the infringement."

Yeah, it is great in enforcing the copyright laws, and limiting you what you can do with the media you bought/downloaded.

http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html

I would suggest to stay away from Vista as long as possible, if XP suits your needs. Of course it won't be easy, as they will create eye-candy games which will run on Vista only...

Vista is already out, you can get the ultimate edition OEM at £130 which normally retails for ~$400

But then you should not try to upgrade your PC's parts too many times, god forbid use this copy on another PC, because Microsoft and Vista will decide that you are a pirate, a criminal, and will disable many of the functionality until you buy a new copy... MS wants your money badly...

Maybe so, but I think Vista is incredible value. If I can buy a copy of Vista OEM for £130, but Dreamweaver costs me £200, then logically it's not so bad, right? With Vista I am getting a whole OS, which has proven to be stable and of very high functionality with it's thousands of satsified beta testers. With Dreamweaver I'd just be getting some syntax highlighting, autocomplete, search tools and a WYSIWYG editor I don't even need.

So in retrospect, £130 seems very affordable to me.
