Hm, I wasn't staggered by that, probably because the kid was obviously supervised and they told him what to say. It's not like they all nipped off for a beer leaving him in charge of the whole airport.

Are trying to say the pilots not being startled by a child directing them is fucked up of the pilots, or are they saying this guy letting his kid do this is irresponsible?

BBC seem to be reaching for airplane related stories to scare the brits from flying over here.

Even so, you gotta be pretty fucking stupid to let a kid start directing aeroplanes even if you are right there. I was just shocked at how young the kid sounded, when I read the article I assumed it was going to be a teenager or something, not like a 7 year old.

Nah it's true that I'd kick up if I was on a plane coming in and found out my life was in the hands of an American preteen but think about it, the pilot getting the message was probably an old friend of the tower staff so he played along with the kid and knew he was still in capable hands, that sort of thing. Yeah it's a totally unprofessional thing to do, but I when I saw the headline I was totally expecting it to be like some kid had picked up the airport transmissions on his radio and the planes started listening to him or something completely off the wall (and more interesting).

See again that's not as bad as I thought it would be, I was all "holy fuck, some guy just going around flying planes, shit just got real" but it turned out to be a pilot who simply didn't renew his existing license. So he had all the skills and training, and was employed by the airline for years, then just didn't feel like paying to get a new bit of card with his name on it.

The consequences of this one are perhaps a little more serious, but it comes down on the heads of this guy's superiors who clearly had no idea or at least no concrete records of his current license so it could have been anyone flying the plane. But did the pilot put anyone in danger? I would say not even for a moment.
