It's official, he died just a few minutes ago in intensive care...
Here's what the beeb's site reports on Best:

Football legend George Best has died in hospital at the age of 59.

A statement said the ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland star died on Friday afternoon following "a long and very valiant fight".

Best had multiple organ failure after a lung infection which he developed last week led to internal bleeding.

He had been in west London's Cromwell Hospital since being admitted with flu-like symptoms on 1 October, later suffering a kidney infection.

Best, a recovering alcoholic, needed drugs after a 2002 liver transplant that made him susceptible to infection.

The Belfast-born former footballer and television pundit had been prescribed medication to suppress the immune system and prevent his body rejecting the new liver.

I have no sympathy for someone who drinks their way to that condition. There's far more needy people in the world who deserved his medication.

My mum works with disabled people at trealore college in Alton, and theirs a guy their who im good friends with called Dan. hes 18 years old and soffers from muscular dicrafey (deont know how you spell).

It means he will only live up to about 20. He knows that and its quite sad really.

But anyway he said somthing that was very true about george best.
Some people were talking about him and Dan started getting a bit frustrated. So I asked him what was up and he said,'' George Best had the chance to live, they gave him everything, even a new liver, but he kept drinking and fucked that one up to''.

Its sad he died but it was his own fualt, so meh.

Damn man. I also grew up with this guy... well not watching his football but on TV.

its sad really... I used to be a big football fan but now not as much... He had such a good and bad life at the same time... when he was in his prime he was big... I think he was one of the first ever sportsmen to get all these sponsors and all this cash.

I love his house :P it was close t 100% made out of glass. lol

But I guess the drink killed him in the end...

RIP Best

So he significantly shortens his life through a lot, and I mean a lot, of drinking. In 2002 he gets a liver transplant, and only a few months afterwards he's seen carrying bags loaded with beer cans around. He started to drink himself to death again, despite taking a liver somebody else could have had - someone who would have actually been able to get over drinking. Now I know that Alcoholism is a disease and INCREDIBLY difficult to treat, however much money is thrown at it. George Best was clearly someone whose disease proved incurable and it's very sad for him and everyone who loved him that most of his life was been dominated by the effects of this horrible illness. But it still makes me so angry that he took a liver that could've gone to someone else. I won't comment on the oh-so-popular opinion that its a waste of good NHS money, because, thank god, he was in a private hospital and paying his own way.

Still, RIP. He made a lot of people happy way back when.

pwned!

What you have to respect is the impact he had on a mass culture and his influence on them. He changed so many people's lives. Surely that's worth respecting?

All the money he had, apparently he spend thousands on booze, women and gambling per week, but he just wasted the rest...

Anyway, yeah it's pretty crappy, he was an okay dude when he wasn't fucked off his head. He did put himself in that state though, carried on pissing his life away on booze when he was told not to. That makes it all the more sad. Also, Pat Morita died today, which sucks as well.
