Re-Install Windows

When I try ot reinstall windows it says it can't because the version on the cd is a older version than the one alrdy on the hard drive. So it says to restart my computer and boot from the cd. I reset my computer many times but it doesn't boot. How can I boot from the cd?

You need a newer disc.

the version is only newer because I downloaded a patch off the microsoft website. It says it can install the version from the cd, but I need to reset my computer and boot from the cd. I don't know how to do that

To boot from CD I think you might have to go into your BIOS and change the boot-partition from Hard Drive to CD-Drive.

What version of Windows is it by the way?

windows xp, I have a bunch of shit I can't get rid of on my hard drive and I'd rather just reinstall windows to get rid of it then spending hours trying to figure out whats wrong.

All you do is go into your bios and change the setting from hard drive to cd, then follow the instructions.

how do you get to your bios? run/msconfig ...?

If there is shit you cant get rid of then format your hard drive and install Windows fresh.

If you wanna get rid of loads of shit off your drive and start fresh, then you're best off formatting. I can't actually remember how to do it properly though, I'm sure someone else knows.

does anyone know how to format? well the stuff I can't get rid of is this shared folder that is full of compressed files such as programs, video and porn. I don't know how I got it but if I delete it comes back. My antivirus and my spyware program hasn't found anything wrong with it.

Also a bunch of my programs freeze and my computer randomly resets itself (might be connected to the folder). So since its just a folder I need off my hard drive do I need to format? If not how do you get into the BIOS?

Make sure you have all the necessary driver disks for your system first.

Click "format" if you want to format, this totally wipes your disk. I've never actually needed to format, so I couldn't tell you exactly what happens.

To boot your new os from cd you need to get into the bios when the system starts up, press F2. Then change the boot up procedure from hard disck to CD.

ok I have another question, all my videos are in .avi. I have them all on tapes but is there a way I can compress them to fit on a cd so I can just transfer them?

I'm not a medium converter expert. But I think you have to plug your tape device into your computer's video card then transfer them onto the hard disk before you can burn to cd. I'm not sure if you need software or anything. I would google it if I were you.

ya its just the fact that the files are like 1000mb each and my cds can only hold 700mb

Well if you want to put them onto cd you will either have to split them in two or burn them to dvd.

It's really easy. Enter the BIOS, different BIOS' are different on different motherboards, but browse around and find a section reading "Boot order" or something similar, then push "CDROM" to the top. If you want exact instructions, tell me the make of your Motherboard.

After you've saved the changes to your BIOS, your PC will reboot and boot from the XP CD in your drive. When you see a screen reading "Hit any kley to boot from CD" do so. Up will come a load of license bollocks you need to agree to, agree. Once the partition page comes up on your screen, delete all existing partitions/installations of Windows and you'll be left with one partition reading "RAW" select and hit enter. Once the format screen is on your screen, select NTFS, but use the slow format instead of the quick format as your OS installation is more stable and lasts longer.

Reformat the whole hting.and it will install chnge the boot partition, restart your comp and pres F10

As he said BIOS's differ from mainboard to mainboard but if you don't see a section at the top of the BIOS saying "BOOT" then have a look in the advanced section and look for 1st 2nd 3rd boot etc.

The only thing that will differ on the setup from booting from the windows XP CD is if you have a SATA hard disk on your computer, but if your computer is having problems installing from the setup screens after booting from the XP CD then let us know.

ok, I did everything, deleted the partition but now on my new windows I have no internet connection. Before it was a LAN connection and a 1394 connection but now there's no LAN connection. How would I connect to it???

My cousin said I formatted wrong (I dunno if I formatted, I took gmans advice and just deleted the partition) and he said when you format it says if you want to install internet connections, and I was supposed to click yes. Should I do everything over?

Also when I tried to format (I clicked on My computer, sided clicked on the hard drive and clicked format) it said it couldn't format because devices on that drive were still in use. what do I do to get my internet connection back?

I installed XP pro the other day and I had no problems. Just followed the on screen instructions, internet connections were available. Although I didn't format the hd.

I'd start over though.

I started over again and same thing, theres no internet connection. is there anyway you get your computer to reconize the internet connection?

yes install the CD's that came with the software if not call the company for them and ask for help.
