To Use Signed Artist Or Not?

So since I'm in the editing process of my DVD, I'm really at a crossroads for music choices. I have some pretty good local talent lined up, but I always find myself wanting to use tracks from signed artists. This is most specific to skating parts. I just wanted some people's takes, who know what they're talking about, on the dilemma. I've talked to different people and have about a 50/50 result in responses.

well the simplest way I look at this, mainly cuz im lazy and dont want to write alot will be this.

for sure use some good unknown/unsigned artists. its good for you, its good for them, and it sucks for everyone else out there that wants to listen to the bands music after watching the dvd and basically since its not mainstream and hard to find it, they will basically have to pay for it. so I dunnno, I dont even think im making sense right now

but if you do use mainstream music/signed artists just do like what they do in the credits for skate music.

I would go with unsigned then the whole dvd would be 'homegrown'. but I think 50/50 is pointless unless the unknown people are extremely good an if they were I imagine they would be signed

I think the best thing is to just use whatever music you like. If you just sell it to friends and HGFers it doesnt matter.

Maybe make a first version with signed bands (and unsigned) and then make a 2nd edition with unsigned if you aim at getting it distributed and into stores and what not.

In Finland(and the EU ?) there is a law about this that says that you can use whatever copyrighted and trademarked and so on. as long as you dont sell over 200copies me thinks. hmm in not too sure on that amount but w/e... me thinks you gets the point.

I would go with unsigned. Like above, its more "Homegrown" and its more personal I guess. Like a sense of acomplishment about the whole thing. Plus if it gets picked up and distributed it saves you having to re-edit.

Haha, the opinions are about 50/50 on here too. I will probably do my best to edit it with unsigned artists, but if I just ain't feelin' it I guess I'll give in.
