To get this thing rolling, I was just screwing around with some chords and managed to pick up 'Nutshell' by 'Alice in Chains,' I then threw a crappy little improvised solo over it, because, well, boredom I guess.

Yeah, there's quite a few mistakes, but I left them in there just to let everyone know that I also suck, plus I couldn't really be bothered. So if you wanna show me up, or just want to contribute to the thread, post up your work. =)

I learnt using online tabs and being generally good at most things I do.

wow that was a bit big headed.

I got a nickel allergy that means whenever I play, I pretty much immediately get this rash on my fingers. Anyone know if they make hypoallergenic strings for an acoustic guitar, or if there's something else I can do?

You could get the nylon strings, gives it a different sound but they're not metal

Blargh, I thought your solo was pretty good, fitted the piece well, but a couple of the phrases seemed as if they could be stronger. What do you record onto?

I'm not sure, to be honest that's the first time I've heard of such a thing. Check with your local music shop about that, if it's a common problem there's probably a different kind of string that doesn't use nickel.

Yeah, I could've gone hard and made it a lot better, but I did the whole thing in less than five minutes because I didn't want it to sound professional or anything, just it case it made people a bit weary of posting their own work. It was recorded on a simple headset microphone and dubbed together using 'Audacity,' a nice little freeware audio editor.

I used to play and was alright but couldn't progress past a certain point so gave up.

ive been playing guitar very lightly for about 7 years. I would say im decent at the basics, but I cant solo and I really dont know any scales.

I have a badass setup though..

Yeah, everyone kind of reaches that 'plataeu' state where they don't feel they're progressing, what I usually do is switch styles, for example, if I'm playing a lot of general rock stuff I might start messing around with some slow, acoustic jams, or delve into some blues or something. I'm sure if you picked it up again and 'worked out your kinks' a bit, you'd be back into it in no time.

Good thread El Blargho, this will come in use for me as it is kinda topical for me at the moment.
You see I just found my old guitar I got for my 14th birthday and started learning how to read guitar tabs on the net and have learned so far to play the intros to:
Rise Against - Swing Life Away, Mest - Drawing Board, Blink 182 - Adam's Song, CKY - Escape From Hellview

Before this enlightening learning experience I could only play songs with basic chords

Keep at it dude, I can remember growing up with a guitar, but never thought that one day I could actually play it, untill I was screwing around on it and learned Come as your are by Nirvana. Since then I just studied as much as I could from various resorces, mainly the internet and the occasional guitar magazine. After a good 6 months practicing, you'll end up amazing yourself by the things you've learned.

You're like 23-24 right? When did you start to play the guitar?

I'm 21 and it just feels that my fingers got used to the guitar a little too late when I try to learn new songs :/

I started playing at around 17, when I dropped out of school. Did the traditional 'bum around home stoner' thing, and started playing because basically I had nothing better to do.

Your fingers will always seem to go where you don't want them to, you just got to train them. Switching between chords used to fuck me up a bit, hell, they still do sometimes, especially if the chord shapes are really strange, but after an hour or two practicing you'll end up nailing it eventually.

I've been playing for around six years I think, but only seriously for 3 or so. I have an ESP F50 and I absolutely love it! I use my friend's DigiTech processor most of the time. I have a Marshall cab but no head so it's pretty useless. I just play through a small Peavy for now.

ive played about a year and im pretty kickass, I have a viper 400 ltd, I can play sweet dreams, 96 bitter beings, seven nation army, a bunch of riffs. mostly I get stoned and make up my own shit.

I never had an urge to play guitar or anything, I was given a guitar(possibly stolen property) learned from freinds and tabs.

Does anyone know how to play Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) correctly? The tabs I run into on the web all sound like shite

ben, try using different hand positions. sometimes that can make a world of difference with tabs. ive basically taught myself through tabs, and sometimes they dont sound right unless you are holding the right chord, or have the wrong fingers in the wrong place.

Time of your life uses these four chords . . .

To play the song, play the chords in this order : 1, 2, 3 for the verse, 4, 3, 2, 1 for the bridge and 4, 1 then 3 for the chorus.

You'll have to work out the picking and strumming patterns for yourself, but that's pretty much it. =)
