Alot of guys are heading to Uni this year or next, I was just wondering where you guys are going.

But seriously, here's my beef with college: Everyone makes young people beleive "YOU MUST GO TO COLLEGE TO EVAR SUCCEEED IN LIFE!!!". It's too much pressure. Between grades, and money, most young people are overwhelmed and end up quitting before they even start to try. I know I did, and holy shit was a relieved to figure out you can live life just fine without a stupid sheet of paper that states you're a "college graduate".

College/Uni degrees show that you have the dedication to stick at something and make something out of it, just not the skills you get over the years. That's why a lot of jobs state for a degree level education although don't specify a degree that involves that type of work.

I know it's who you know not what you know when it comes to jobs, it's true but not everyone wants to be in a 9-5 so early in life.

Professional writing and literary studies at victoria university (also do other subjects in media and cinema studies). Be starting my second year at the end of this month.

Wanna do Journalism. Got offers from Cardiff, Sheffield, Coventry and Central Lancashire and been invited to applicant days at Bournemouth and John Moore's in Liverpool. Ideally I would go to Bournemouth because the course and student village fucking rock, or Cardiff cos it's one of the best unis in Europe, plus me and Liam would be together as 'those two southerners who get drunk at parties and rape girls without leaving a shred of DNA evidence'

I should have gone to uni last Sept to Uclan, but I'm doing a gap year instead.

I'm going to Uclan in Sept doing TV Production.

I've been in College (American "Uni") for a year now. Thomas More College.
I agree with you to an extent Boner, about the pressure that it puts on kids and that it can really have a lot of negative effects. But, at the same time, it's about dealing with and adapting to those pressures while learning a whole shit load at the same time. It's those pressures that are going to be with you your entire life and College is just a transition into adulthood for young adults to use to become responsible and more intellectually developed. It's not for everyone though and that's where the system's fucked up and where I agree with you. Everyone in America is told you either go to college or you live on the streets and that's just not the case. If you can get by easily without college, by all means save yourself a lot of time and money and don't go. But, it does a whole lot to get you more skills and experience that today's professional fields require for you to get anywhere. You can get all mad at it if you want, but the fact is that it's becoming a necessity to get to where you want to be professionally for the majority of job fields today.

^Good example. And Sean, weren't you always told you had to go to college? I know I was, and here I am I'm such a tool. People with the skills and know-how to get by without it are usually the most successful people. Bill Gates, for example, never went to college. It's just that the majority of the people who don't go to college don't have as much success as people that do.

haha yeah....when I was growing up - not going to college was synonymous with being a loser.

Actually, I've found the opposite to be true. Experience seems more important nowadays, a college degree only counts for so much until a prospective employee comes along who knows their shit and a company chooses them over some computer science graduate.

A college course does not make you good at a set job, experience and a passion for that field does.

Yeah, but a lot of businesses won't even look at your resume' if you don't have a college degree. And a dude who knows a whole lot about computer science will quickly be over-looked because he didn't go to school in the first place while someone else with half the know-how but went to school for 4 years will show up and get first offerings. I'm not saying it's right, but it's just the way a lot of professional businesses work. There's no denying the benefits of getting a college education, you learn a lot in college that you would otherwise not know. Granted, a lot of it you don't need to know, but you're still a more intellectually acute person, and knowledge is power! Plus, college is sort of becoming something that separates or divides people a lot easier - the people that put up with the shit and spent the time/money/effort into college and those that didn't. Businesses are more apt to choose the person who went through all of the work to get to where they are, even if they aren't as profession-savvy as the next applicant.

Edit - I agree with the passion for the job and experience making for a better employee, completely. It's just getting your foot in the door and getting started doing something you want to do in the beginning and gaining that experience in the first place that you'll need the Degree for. Otherwise you may have a lot of job experience just not doing what you want to do ultimately. While a college degree in most cases will get you where you want to be without having to have a lot of previous experience and credo outside of the piece of paper.

Im kinda regretting perhaps not applying for a uni now....dunno what I would really have done, only course I ever looked into was photo journalism at a Brighton uni, ah well, if I really want to I will do it next year.

I was at a uni for half a year then quit. I didn't like schools at all due to they gave me a general education, lot's of stuff that didn't interest me at all. Needless to say I hated learning biology, chemistry, literature, etc.etc. I got a very good computer related education in secondary school (age 14-18). The teacher was a woman, whose husband taught the same material on the technical university. She even told us not to go to uni to learn more of computers, because they wont teach more. What one will get at that uni is tons of extra mathematics, physics.

So I applied for a computer related job, and that's what I do for living. I had colleagues who had a university degree, and they weren't even close to me in the level of knowledge in my field.

As someone else pointed out, university is about if you can force yourself to learn alot of uninteresting stuff, and pass all those exams.

are you talking college in the America sense or British,did a travel and terrisom(tourism)course,went to spain for free and quit after now doing e-Media which is so much better,hopefully going to uni next year if all goes to plan!!
