I am beginning production for a game entitled "Homegrown".

Basically, it is going to be an RPG game - very basic, is it will be my first RPG. The goal of the game is much like any other RPG game - fight, level up, collect characters, kill boss characters, etc.

However, since it is based on homegrown, it will have a cool twist that no other game (to my knowledge) has.

Basically, I would like to take different people from the homegrwon communities (maybe a couple from each group), e.g. Evil-Webby, Vode, etc. who do stunts int heir homegrown videos, and make them a character in the game.

The lead character of the game will not be someone from the homegrown community - it will just be some random guy who is going to play the role of producer, and the person playing the game can rename to whatever they want.

This lead character will venture around a make-believe world, where the different homegrown community members will be hiding. When you find a character, you can get them to join your party. You may have to complete a task to get them to join, or do something else along those lines - I haven't worked out all the details yet - but at any rate, you will be able to get characters to join your party. Each of these members (all from HGF) will come equipped with missions - e.g. (1. Find a skateboard. 2. Find a skate park 3. Find a grind rail etc.) They will also have video clips which correspond to the missions. So with the previous example, the clip that this person has would be a skating clip which takes place in a skatepark. When you complete the mission, as long as you have already found a camera, you can "film the clip", and the clip gets added to your video inventory.

You will basically navigate the world in this manner, collecting characters and clips, until you have accomplished some ultimate mission - at which time, you will bring all of your video back to the studio, and you will compile them into a clip.

The game itself will then (hopefully; if I can pull it off) render the clips into a single clip, which you can upload, share, watch, enjoy, etc.

Enemies in the game will consist of police, random hooligans, disliked members of the HGF forums (can anyone say MOODY??), etc.

Thats about it for my description, off the top of my head.

So give me your opinions, as the homegrown community, as to what you think about this idea. Offer any suggestions to make the game more insteresting. Let me know if you would be willing to help with the project; if you would be interested in having your footage featured, etc. I will probably need a graphic artist at some point - and I know people here can do that. So if you are interested in helping with anything, let me know.

Btw. As of right now, I don't intend for this game to be spectacular enough to make money off. I have never made a game of this scale before, so I expect it to look like a game made by someone who has never made a game before. So I wouldn't expect any monetary kick-backs from donating work/footage. More or less, its something to amuse the people on these forums - and hopefully it will be amusing.

Sounds pretty tight.

They whole idea on having a final video at the very end and shit is cool, and I think you should get bonus points from how well it went, so people can be beating each others final scores.

If you wanted alot of replay value I'd make it so you couldn't get all the characters in one group and you had to replay and shit a few times to get every possible stunt done.

^ haha sweet. I wanted to do something similar to that, which is where the idea came from.

It will probably be 2d, like zelda (a lik to the past) or early FF games (thats 2d, right?? or is it 3d?)

FMS - as to your ideas; my idea is that there is a maximum # of party members. You can add new people to your party - but once you shoot all their footage (or the footage you want, etc.) I was thinking of making it so they can leave your party as well - that way you can replace them with a new person. I will make it so they have to trace back and forth to get items and what not to do the stunts.

Naw, cause after someone films with you they kind of stick with your ass, that would be cool to not be able to get rid of a member after you accept them and film somthing with them.

I was going to wait a while to release the idea - until I got a ways into the project - because this will undoubtedly take months - perhaps as long as a year - and I didn't want to get hope up right away.

Problem is, I have to know which characters I will be able to include - as well as which footage I can include before I can start designing levels and what not. So I really had to get the support of the community here before I could get very far.

This is still going to be a long time in the making. But I need to know what I have to work with - and any ideas that people have are also appreciated.

FMS - I agree, that would be an odd sort of twist - then you would have to choose your characters very wisely. You would basically be building your own dream team homegrown group. However, I feel that by doing it that way, characters may not be picked up in the beginning of story - which will make battles tough, because you won't have enough characters to do damage and take hits. If people wait to pick certain people, then it might severealy hamper game play. I suppose I could make the party larger than originally intended, and that could help - but I will have to find a way around this possibility if I am going to consider that route.

I'm sure the best thing would be just using an engine for some other applicable game, otherwise it will end up being second rate [I can't see you making a dece game by yourself without funding etc].

It will no doubt end up being second rate... but I am mostly doing this as a means to better learn the intricacies of C++. I just thought it was a cool idea, and a good way to do it. I already do a lot of programming, but I have never done a huge project such as this. Its a learning project.

Soemthing like that, yeah. This is kinda where I'm stuck - because I don't know what else would make good enemies - or like boss characters. I suppose I could have MTV agents with mind control beams or something. Any suggestions on that??
