It didnt get mad traffic. It got like...3k unique visitors a day at its peak. For a video site...thats shitty.
3k unique, with no advertising or shit like that, most of that was word of mouth, so I can see why someone would buy that because it had some sick potential.

nah site like that only cost money.. hard to get mad cash out of it I think.. but yep he should have sold it.. he must have a backup laying around somewhere? I'd rebuy it and sell it for a good ammount?
20 July 2006, 15:33 UTC#33
No point, you would need a heck of a server. And with all the free hosting about now it wouldnt be as "good".

3k is nothing dude, especially when you're gonna need advertising to pay. From 3k I guess he'd make maybe a sale every 3 days if he's lucky. Thats about $15 to cover 3 days worth of a stupid amount of bandwith burned. It could have been really succesful because it was one of the first free video upload sites, but Karl fucked it up as usual.
Youtube are losing money, I'm not suprised.

Guys,
I didnt fuck it up, we were trying to sell it and chris expected to get a fuckload more than it was really worth, one guy offered 8000 but later changed his mind, there were several offers from people at somewhere around 2 - 3 k but chris wanted to get more and didnt accept
Then hi-velocity's network was fucked up and they would not admit to it, they kept denying it was the network, about 3 days after we had moved to a temp server with that coldmedia alex guy, we got an email from hivelocity annoucing some network fixes had occured , therefore the problem WAS with there network.
Then alex must have done something wrong and fucked up the whole server, he claimed it was a cpanel update, and the datacenter ouldnt get the data back. so that basically killed the whole site, at which point chris and I were pissed.
The site, as far as I remember, at its hayday got about 50k pageviews a day and 120 k uniques a month, which is a medium sized site.
As far as us making it better and selling it for more, that was our plan to making ads worth it for advertisers and trying to get like a grand of revenue a month to make it worth 12k, but after the server crash, we both kinda just lost interest in trying to get it back to the way it was, with all the videos gone, we would be starting from scratch, it just wasnt worth the money, and chris owed his parents a shitload of money for the server, and I guess he didnt have enough to start it again. he still owes me 200 lol.
we were gonna try to make it a linkdump for videos but chris lost his internet when he moved and was almost never on,
realistically the downfall of dfilms was coldmedia's fault.

12 August 2006, 12:16 UTC#42
thought I would reply.
The site died because of coldmedia alot of sites were lost and mine was one of them.
I did turn down an offer for $3500 but I never turned down an offer for $8000 nor did I ever see an offer for $35,000!
And most of what you guys are saying is true DFILMS was a money sucking whore I probably spent between $2000-$3000 on it during the year or 2 I ran it..thats a fair amount for a 16yr old with no source of income. Anyway I dont know why some of you are ripping on me I was trying my best and for what it was (a hobby) I thought it was a pretty good site.
edit: sorry for GIANT bump
