Need some serious help

I come home from the moutians to find my roomate has screwed up my computer beyond my fixing abilities....

Whenever the computer is turned on, the screen remains black for a bit, then the text "Error Loading OS"
appears.

I tried using the boot cd that came with my alienware, but it isnt booting off the cd at all.

Any ideas? Im not even sure where to begin....

remove the hard drive and hardwire it into another pc, reformat then put back in your pc and re-install os... its the easy way to do it man..
I dont know shot about fixing dos or the os so this may not be your only option..

If I could do it without formatting it, that would be best

I think brent's right man, same thing happend to mine about a year ago, I took it to a shop and all they did was reformat it from a dif pc.

Reset your jumpers. Basically resetting the motherboard. Did you try that?

No, the jumpers simply reset the motherboard. All the settings. It doesn't do anything to the hard drive(s). Do you have a manual that came with your computer? You have to know your exact motherboard in order to get a tutorial on it because every one is different.

Another way to reset the BIOS if you're not tech savvy is to unplug the PC, open up the case and remove the onboard battery for 20 seconds, put back in and plug your PC in again.

Yeah, you can either reset using the jumpers or the battery method. Personally, I tend to use the jumpers as it avoids unplugging shit. But for newbies, it's a good method.

Removing the system battery causes power loss to the BIOS chip. The BIOS memory chip is VOLATILE, therefore doesn't retain the BIOS setting. Don't you even know that the purpose of the motherboard battery is to conserve settings? Havn't you ever had a flat BIOS battery.

Apparently it doesn't have anything to do with the BIOS then.

You say that you get a "Error loading OS" message right? This could indicate hardrive failure. Check all the connections to the hard-drive are fine. BTW, did you unplug the PC before removing the battery? If not, then that's why the method didn't work. The reason why I'd reccomend a BIOS reset before anything else is because sometimes the BIOS reads the HDD parameters wrong and a reset usually sorts it.

If you have a spare hardrive, I'd reccomend re-installing Windows on that because apparently the current HDD could be damaged. Otherwise nab your XP disk and try reformat. You can check that your BIOS is recognising the HDD by going into your BIOS, the first option (can't remember what it's called ATM as I'm hungover) and where a reset BIOS reads "Auto" over the drives, navigate to each of the 4 autos and hit enter.

Sorry about my vagueness, it's hard for me to think right now.

yeah the only way not to lose all your stuff is to install a new hard drive and pout windows on it, and boot from the the new one, grab all the stuff from your old hard drive , format it and re-install windows on it. =]

Yeah I had unplugged the comp and left the battery out for a minute.

I cant get into bios because the option never pops up, it goes to a black screen...then the text error loading os appears, I tried using my recovery disc to fix the problem, however it doesnt load from the cd at all when its starting,

maybe im an idiot and pressing the wrong thing to get into the bios setup, what should I be pressing?

I have a friend who posts on here as D889, he worked for 3 years as a computer techician for a local company. He's off in college now but I'll PM him a link to this thread. I'm sure he can help you man. I can tell you now though that you're going to need to take out your hard drive and stick it in another computer..

getting into bios is different on a few motherboards but its usually either F1 or DEL or ESC when your pc is booting up

but yeah WEAK is probably right, you'll most likely have to put your HDD in another pc.
