Footage from DVD

ok so iv only just got a dvd writer,

iv got some footage on dvd from the local bmxers/skaters uk tour 05
I was ment to be going with them to film it all. but it was a week after my accident so I was in hospital,
they filmed as much as they could, the guy whos cam it was burnt the footage from the mini dv to a dvd

its not burnt as data like a data cd..so no drag and drop,

you can put it into a dvd player and you can watch an hour of raw footage

I need to know how to capture it to my pc so I can edit it.

so any help would be kick ass :-)

I use things like Nero which will convert it to a media format like avi or mpg. but there are things like DIVX www.divx.com wich will convert it to the same format as it is on DVD but to AVI and better Q. Also DivX or XVID is free.

You have to get dvd ripper program.

"Super dvd ripper" worked for me.

DVD shrink and DVD decrpter are the best and iv tried alot

I dont think dvd shrink rips dvds to videofiles?

yeah im pretty sure it does

I just dont know how then, I use super dvd ripper for that. And dvd shrink to get full dvd backups, with menus and all ths shizzle.

you could watch the dvd on tv and hook your cam up to the tv and cap it to minidv....I think....would that work ?

that sounds eaziest...takes hours the way im doing it

What wires do you need? I have the scart lead, and the 3 colour wires, red, white and yellow. How do you cap it onto your DV tape?
And can you do this with the TV, for like programmes? This would help alot, as I make alot of music videos.

It depends on if you have the right ports on your camera if you'll be capable of doing it or not. Seeing as not many TVs, VCRs, or DVD players are compatible with firewire (I don't think I've ever seen one, but they probably do exist), you'd have to use the A/V cables, usually called the RCA cables (the one with yellow, red, and white tips). So unless your camera has A/V-IN ports that are compatible with the RCA cables (it would probably have to be a higher end camera) you probably won't be able to do it. Though pretty much ALL camcorders have the A/V out ports to output to your TV, if you have a low-end camera you most likely don't have the A/V-IN ports, at least not the RCA ones anyway. As one alternative option, however, many cameras have the S-Video port, and many DVD players also have it, but I haven't really ever used S-Video before, so I couldn't really tell you what to do on that one.

Err well, I have the one with the colour tips (red, white and yellow) I use them to plug into the TV, then watch my footage from my DV tapes on the TV.

So thats the A/V Cable, right? If so, how do I record from a DVD onto my camcorder DV Tapes?
Do I plug the A/V, RCA Cable into my DVD Player, then do I go to camera mode (on my camera) then just record? Im going to try it soon.

Is that basically how you do it or not?

EDIT: Actually got it working off my DVD Player! My old one never did this, yay!!
But is it possible to record off the TV, With the A/V Cable? Or scart lead, with the colour ends of the cable plugged into this scart extension, then into the back of my TV?

EDIT: I had written a lot more detailed description, but your edit confused me...if you managed to get it working that way then congrats, and you can probably record from the TV in the same manner if it worked for the DVD player.

All I did was plug the A/V cable into my cam, and the back of my DVD player. Played a DVD and it appeared on my cams LCD Screen in "VCR Mode" I then just recorded on my cam, and it just records it.

But I cant get it to work on my TV, I can get whatevers on the screen to show up on my cam.

Are there any wires I can buy so I can record onto my cam, from my TV?

I cant explain it any simplier, I just did that and it appeard on my Cams Screen. Then I just record.
