To be honest I wouldn't say Premiere is as advanced as people make out. If you wanted to make a basic clip all you would need to do is;
1) Import video files
2) Chop and trim with the timeline
3) Export as whatever you want
4) Bingo.
There is a lot more to Premiere when you look deeper into it like garbage matting and other effects, but you can get away with using Premiere for basic stuff.

for that paticular thing I was talking about vegas... but it isnt that simple, the basic clip editing. That chop and trim phase is a bitch wit everything else than Pinnacle and WMM. If you ahve never tried Pinnacle, you dotn have any idea how easily can chop and trim be done. In these others it takes ages to do things that I do in ten seconds in Pinnacle.
EDIT. excuse my rant its probably only about what are you used to.
