Picture help..Dunno what to call it

I've had photoshop for awhile now and know all the basics but I'm doing something and I need just the body and face of a picture I dont know how to .. crop it I guess you could call it but yeah I need help I dont know how to search for this since I dont know what it's called heres a lil picture.. as an example

you see Q right? I need q and only q of the image.. lol I hope that clears up any confussion.

select the area then goto select and Inverse

Cut it using "lasso" "polygonal lasso" or "magnetic lasso"

It didnt work I cant move the image I just have the dotted lines around it.

you know all the basics but you can't select and crop an image?

I know how to crop an image but I need it to look well and not with all those lines like when people have it in there sigs and the edges are smooth and stuff..

you can either zoom in reall close and use the magnetic lasso and then touch up with the eraser to make it not so jagged, or you can stay zoomed in and trace along the edges with a small erase brush. that's how I do it.
