Since about yesterday I havn't been able to get on the internet

But it gets worse...when I came to do my weekly virus scan, Norton wouldn't start, so I rebooted, tried again, nothing happened, so then I assumed something was wrong with the software so I then planned to uninstall it, so I went onto Add/Remove Program, tried to uninstall Norton and I couldn't.

and there's more...I cant open Word unless it's in safety mode:shok: Image file not present in the recovered backup Image file not present in the recovered backup Image file not present in the recovered backup OMG, but seriously, I have no idea why this is happeening.

NOTE: The only reason im able to post is because I can, for some reason, access t'interweb via Ares Image file not present in the recovered backup

Download: Ad-Aware

It might just be spyware and you need to get rid of it. Give it a try. If not, tell me and I will see what else there is to try.

Put your computer into safe mode and run norton.

If you don't know how, press f8 right while your computer is booting up.

Norton sucks ass.

Get AVG antivirus free, and ad-aware. Scan. If your PC is still bitching around, check your LAN connection, and repair it. If it still won't connect, a trojan has probably modified some part of your registy, in which case it's better to do a system restore or just reformat your HDD.

P.S. Stop visiting shitty websites. I just admin a few linux servers, visit HGF, talk on MSN and use Limewire. Since I migrated my PC from Linux back to Windows, I havn't had a single virus, or component of adware. Most often people blame XP, when in actual fact it's the user. Also you may want to check you don't have a firewall blocking your internet access.

thanks for your help and everything, but none of that as worked:-
1. I cant download AVG anti-virus

2. All my restore points have been deleted

3. How can I check my firewall if I cant start Norton? And I checked windows firewall and that not blocking internet access

4. I put my PC in safe mode, but Norton still wouldn't run

All restore points deleted? Definately a virus then, plus Norton won't run so a trojans modified it. Control + alt + delete to check if any suspicious processes are running, if so terminate. If you can't get AVG and ad-aware from another computer and burn it to disk, or from your PC then I'm afraid you're going to have to reformat.

Edit: As one last resort try and clear your cookies, offline files and history, open a new IE browser and test. I presume you are using Shinternet Explorer? Shoulda used firefox.

your fucked, try a repair install to fix all the shit the virus did to windows, and completely uninstall norton since its not helping you in the first place. avg wont do you any better than norton did, your best bet is to buy a real antivirus or get norton corporate.

it would be easiest if you could pull the drive out and scan it on another computer.

Repair install may work, depending on how malicious the virus is. It's obviously still there and disabled norton before a scheduled scan.

But try what d889 suggested and find your XP disk, run through the installation until you get to the partition page, where you simply hit "r" over the primary partition to repair the Windows installation.

I'll say it once, and I'll say it again...stop visitng crappy porn sites, they are full of shit.

ill try looking at my processes, but if that doesnt work ill do a manual uninstall of Norton, then reinstall it and do a ful system scan

and by the way, I use Firefox
