Well, allow me to rant for a second.
See, in my area there is a big problem with racism (like many places in America). There are racists from every ethnicity, but for the most part, it's a sort of whites vs. blacks attitude in a lot of places around here. There are parts of the city where there are really nice homes and plenty of quality jobs and educational opportunities, and these are the same places that the white people live for the most part.
Cincinnati (and its Kentucky counterpart, Covington) are really bad about having de facto segregation. This is where people are pretty much segregated not by choice from one side or another, but because the social situation and opportunities provided to each side are not close to equal. People are allowed to move from one side of town to the other, but they just can't because they lack the means to.
The problem I have with this article is that they're focusing on this one idiot who dropped out of high school and got put in jail for 2 years for beating up a dark-skinned immigrant. He has two kids at age 26 and hasn't been able to pay child support for either one of them. Now, does this guy's obvious lack of an education and resultant lack of understanding have a clear influence over his opinions? Not a doubt in my mind. So, we have this insignificant guy who means fuck all who just hates because he doesn't know anything better to do, and we're drawing all of this attention to him.
All that article does is draw attention away from the real issues in our city that cause such a large disparity in quality of life. We have openly racist people on the radio (look up Bill Cunningham) who are well-educated and have a lot of influence over peoples' opinions and ideas. But, they're not getting dragged through the mud like this poor oaf is. If the newspaper was going to do an article on racism, it shouldn't be about the piss-ant dropout trashfuck. It should be about the people making the decisions to keep my city racist by not making the necessary changes to improve quality of life for everyone. We change the way we're forcing the people in the poor areas to live, then our perception of them will improve, and hatred of them will dissipate.
Yeah, that guy is a fuck head. But he doesn't mean anything. The important people keeping people like him thinking the way he does are the ones we need to draw our attention to.
