I wrote this for wikipedia articles but it fucked up on me, anyone who could put it up for me I would appreciate it, just copy and paste it from here, but this is my stab at generalizing homegrown
Homegrown. Most of you have probably heard the term used to describe either weed or something done at home, but most have never head it referred to filming. For a large underground community of filmers homegrown is not only a title, but for most it's a way of life.
"Homegrown" refers to the genre of movies these people make. It is used literally because these movies are edited, or mostly filmed at home. But where does it cross the line of film and a reflection of one's self? For many it never does, for those it stays something they just do with there free time. But for the rest it consumes them, and for that is one of the purest genres of film, it reflects a different out look on life and takes many forms. For some they film skits, little mini movies all entirely written and performed by them and there friends. For others it's the pranks, flipping off society and rocking the boat, either performed with hidden cameras or with the camera right in the pranksters hand. There are armature stunt-men who live to push the boundaries of there body, and often human perception. And there are those who wish to document the underbelly of the world we all live in.
Most are just called assholes or idiots. But they are all bonded by civilization's negative out look on what they do. Thanks to the internet they have been able to make that mental connection a little bit more physical. For them it doesn’t matter what grades you make, or how you look, it's about how they feel watching your videos. The stunt men feel the bond of broken bones, and stitches. The pranksters and documentarians feel the bond of bail bonds and hand cuffs. The more classical movie makers, that make the skits, they feel the strain of writers block and broken pencils.
Some use homegrown as a spring board for what they want to do in the future, weather it be professional movie making, professional stunt man, editing, or acting they pick up skills and insight that can only come from experience. Others use homegrown as an outlet for teenage angst or frustration. The rest use it for living there life through there film, where if you fail, you have a constant reputation and a demanding fan base of fellow film makers who expect excellence.
Society will always have a negative out look on homegrown, they always do to things they can't understand, but it won’t stop homegrown, or the homegrown.
