$100 laptops

This is seriously cracking me up, some MIT organisation developed some cheap green kids laptops, check the size of the bloody crank. WIND UP LAPTOPS...ahahahha!

EDIT: Read it... if this can be done.... it would be great.... Computers would really take over if there only that amount... forget schools... All you would need is this lot in a building and everything is to hand.

I know its mainly for poor kids but still... Laptops and computers will shoot down in price.

Wonder if its a diff version of windows? Cos I cant see all these kids being able to fully understand everything even though it is Windows.... Maybe its like a kids version.

I don't think that the release of these on shelves, or to schools will have any influence whatsoever to the pricing of desktops nowadays. Those laptops, are manufactured extremely cheaply with inferior components to your average computer. Thus is why they are able to give them away so cheaply.

Seen some of the Dell adverts on TV? Desktop system with HTT, double DDR upgrade, SATA drives, with 15 inch LCD + wireless mouse + keyboard, etc etc for £299? Considering how much more material those systems are comprised of, they are probably hyperthetically cheaper than those MIT systems. Computers are already cheap.old technology is cheap, new technology costs a little more. Will always be that way in the industry Image file not present in the recovered backup

yeah I see what ya are talking about... But I think that these will be built to withstand mroe...

Like I was talking to you on MSN awhile ago... I can see everything being ran by computers soon as there so cheap... But I think soon you will see a diff type of computer... normal ones and ones to withstand alot... not home types but more server types... just built to do after things and not to really (If it can be done) to break as easy.

Thisstory just I think shows how things are moving.

Could be, don't think that will be a problem as they probably have reference manuals the teachers use to learn how tro operate, and if it was a normal version of windows or not, kids can be easily taught.




Maybe so, even so..that's old technology integrated with new ideas, the tech is here today as I previously said. But us being humans, we do like a certain amount of control, therefore choose not to use it. Additionally, more things are controlled by computers nowadays, than we fully realise. The computing world is a controversial place. And regarding "being built to withstand more" - making the plastic case thicker? Using more silicon? In an average desktop system, that ups the price. Not much material goes into these small systems, so they can bung them off real cheaply. Sure manufacterers can make systems more durable now, but part of the reason computers and their components are comparitively cheap, is because compared to say 8 years ago..the quality of components has decreased A LOT. The old systems used to be able to withstand being dropped from a considerable height, modern day systems are made cheaply..hence break easier.

But I get what you are saying, most devices...stoves even are becoming computerised now.

yeah I agree. I still have my first 3 computers which I intend to put into one with Windows ME in and use as some sort of cool thing

And these computers take alot... I opened one up awhile ago and inside was full of bad dust (My mum has a BIG ass dog) and I swear if you saw it you would think it would never work.. the memory was in-crusted with dirt but it still works 100% with no probs.

This washing Machine I have has a link in it which if broke can have the repair guy come in and see exactly how many washes it has done and if I have overloaded it... also can be updated with new software.... WTF..... bigbrother inside my washing machine!!!

if I could though id have most things run by a computer... of course it would not be online... jsut incase... and would not use windows
