I just wanna reccomend to everyone who is serious about making a DVD, and plans on putting money into their project, to purchase a copy of Videography Magazine.

I picked a copy up today and it upset my stomache to see how ass backwards I've gone with this whole project. From everything to the bit-rate of the music I've used to the project format I've selected...all wrong. Even using my standard video card to upload....wrong.

In this magazine you'll see all the ads and reviews for the real equipment needed to make a proper DVD. I see that most are just doing this for fun, but if you are serious about the time and money you're putting into your project, this magazine is worth a read.

Although I hate to stay it, but fucking HD CAM's are the next big thing and they're here to stay. It's going to change everything. The way you film, the way you edit. Everything. It's going to outdate MiniDV just like MiniDV outdated Hi8. It fucking sucks cause HD is a lot more expensive and complicated, especially in terms of uploading.

Here are some example of my findings.

These are the new video cards youll need to upload your HD footage. This one I believe is "only $1995".

As for recording formats, it looks like tapes are going to be replaces by portable wireless hard drives. Fuck that sounds expensive and complicated. To lazy to find a pic of that for ya..

Editing platforms..well even to edit HD video I believe you'll need something much more powerful that the standard comps they have out now, but Im sure computer technology catch up with the camera technology soon enough as HD becomes more popular.

Just pick up a copy of the magazine and youll understand what I mean. Everything is changing and it sucks. Personally, Im still editing in in a 6 year old version of Premiere, so it needless to say that I fucking hate extreme change. I was going to try and ignore it and just do my own thing but all my equipment and work is gonna be outdated and obsolete and I hate that.

Check out Videography Magazine and check out whats coming your way. http://www.videography.com

Ah now this is a good thread :)

I would've thought capturing off dv tapes would be more complicated than a hard drive. It just seems more logical that the files will already be on the hard drive and would need to be copied across to the computers hard drive.

I'm sure a lot of people won't move onto this next generation of cameras with a price tag like that. Especially seeing as a dv tape captured with a fire wire card is sufficient enough for most people thinking about making a 'mess around' dvd.

To be honest, I'd much prefer to with tapes. I've had a lot of problems with my hard drives recently and I'm lucky to recapture footage off old tapes. I'd be fucked if that hard drive within the camera messed up, which seems likely.

The whole point about HG is its meant to look quite raw so most shoudnt be too worried, especially if their going for the raw look.

But weve known bout most of this for sometime so were trying to get an HD camera. But obviously we wont be doing offline edits and then converting the the timelines to the real footage so that its perfect quaity, but we do want to get some HD clips in it for big stunts and normal cams for other angles etc.

How long before this comes into place? I mean how many years before we really see a change from MiniDV cams, and HD cams, how long before they become more popular than MiniDV cams??

about the HD Cams, comon man of course it won't cost you thousands of dollars to get editing.. cameras and accesoires won't get sold if shit is expensive like that. The cheap mini DV cams are mostly for people just filming shit around the house, everyone wants a cam (for cheap), but they will seriously not spend so much on cards and bullshit. If it will be that expensive they will lose a lot of people from a pretty big market and I don't think they want that to happen so don't worry about it :)

I think your wrong. people will spend loads of money on cams and cards. and I think weak is right in what he is saying, It will take time but one day, Mini DV will be un-cool and HD cams will take over. Out with the old in with the new.

They have an internal harddisk? Not a tape? Its like the DVD cams but instead of a DVD there's a HD functioning as place to put the clips on.

You guys are stuck on this HD Cam stuff when thats only half of what Im talking about. For anyone who is going to be having their dvd professionally pressed and would like it to look legit, theres alot of shit your going to be skipping if you plan on just exporting it to a minidv tape and shipping it off to be made. All I was trying to say is that if youre aiming to make a professional dvd you need to pick up a copy of Videography magazine and learn about Color Correction programs and uploading footage at higher quality rates.

and yeah...minidv will be obsolete in 3 years and so will your editing platforms. And after HD is coming XD.

I'll check it out man, I get what you're saying - was just wondering what HD cams record on to.

DR are just starting filming for the DVD and this stuff could be pretty useful.
