Man im so bored right now and thinking of editing some despro shit, which got me thinking,...... what kind of music do you prefer/like editing to?
Personally, I like electronica; simply because you can edit tech, and chuck in after effect's without making it look weird.
Second would be rap ( underground hip hop kinda stuff, not 50 cent or emimem ) because theres usually a nice beat to edit your clips too, or you can just do lazy styles and chuck a few clips together and it will still turn out ok.
I might try editing to a bit of screamo....
Personally I think editing to just that music genre of growling and HXXXXXXXXXCXXXXXXXXXX rock music is just lame and cliche.
(I would have done a poll, but I want to read your opinions.)

I think it all depends on the clip... I usually edit 1st then after its done find music that goes with the feel and make minor adjustments from there

Really?, personally I would find that impossible, how does it turn out? Im guessing you just use the music as a backtrack?
15 October 2005, 08:01 UTC#4
Depends on the mood of the clip. Ambient stuff is pretty sweet for skits.
Punk, screamo and metal stuff is good for some mixups.
I tried using a trip-hop song which had a funky beat for one clip but gave up cause at the time we didn't have enough footage to complete it.
I guess I'm open to any type of music as long as it makes the clip feel "right".
edit: I agree with Word, you really can't choose a song after you've editied a clip. The footage needs to flow with the beat or whatever.
Just slapping music over a bunch of clips is what most new groups who don't know much about editing do.

I would love to use rap and stuff that would be really easy to edit to. The problem with that is my friend (Matt the one that owns the cam) would chuck a shit fit going OMG u expermented. I might just do it one day to piss him off LOL.
I think rap would be really easy to edit to cause I could go with the beat. The fact that I have about 100 free rap beats with no words would make it alot eaiser as well lol.

Editing to music is called "making a music video."
IMO it's perfectly valid to edit a sequence, then pick (or make) a song. Thats how I've edited most all of my stuff in the past

Hmmm, fair enough as a backing track maybe.
But I feel you gotta get music to fit the footage just right.
I don't get how editing to music is making a music video...Most HG vids are editied to music. Doesn't make them a music video...
15 October 2005, 08:32 UTC#8
I just mean, if you're starting off with a song, then you edit footage to go along with the song, the video is following the music. You're making a video for the music.
If you make a video then make or put in some music that adds to it, gives it character, a certain feel or whatever, the music is following the video. You're making (or getting) music for the video.
Either way is fine, most HG stuff is more suited to the first one. The second one is more like dialogue stuff, stuff that has a plot or a flow
15 October 2005, 08:39 UTC#9
I Dont how ( if you want too make the clip flow) you can chuck music on after. First thing we do when making a video is choose the song. A song that has defined sections or a beat is best too edit too, its possible to edit to any type of music really.

Some I use the music as just a backtrack.. but sometimes I edit it to the song.. they turn out decent I think... but hey what do I know?
15 October 2005, 08:48 UTC#11
Classical music. Makes it look like art lol
rap always sounds good on clips n stuff too like you said and I always find it funny when people use death metal kus it just makes the stuff they're doing look pussy with all the hardcore music behind it like
15 October 2005, 08:50 UTC#12
I edit to
hardcore hip-hop/underground rap
nu-metal/heavy metal
rock
movie/video game score remixes
instrumentals [all types]
and I always start with the song 1st then make sure the footage links with it
heres the outcome

thats good for online clips..just wait for the DVD alot ALOT of effort went into making it so would be silly to throw it away with sloppy editing
15 October 2005, 09:02 UTC#13
If I wanted to edit little technical bits with after effects a nice ambient drum and bass song would fit nicely because of all the random sound effects can 'kick off' video effects that would sync together.
15 October 2005, 09:07 UTC#14
I'll also add...standed effects help editing...weird effects kill editing...totally kills it if over used...makes it look stupid and cheesy for good footage. but if the footage is boring n crappy to start with then it helps it be watchible.
15 October 2005, 09:52 UTC#15
Hmm.. finding a song for my clips might take the longest. It takes hours, days, weeks whatever to find a good song.. it has to sound good, not known by everyone, be good to edit to and have something special. I like songs that are a composition of hip hop, rock, drum and bass.
Once you have the right track everything is easy and your clip will be the shit..

Agreed, unless you have some really hardcore footage dont use heavy HEAVY music.
That is what I think, makes me not like alot of groups. Over use of a certain type of music.
15 October 2005, 14:52 UTC#17
I use mostly punk and rock
ive tried with rap a few times but I cant get it to fit with the footage
im pretty tired of just hearing hardcore music on every clip so I try to ecsperiment a little
15 October 2005, 16:10 UTC#18
Well most the time we use Rock/Punk... but you'll see a few clips with hardcore metal for
1. We were joking (No Mercy Fan vid).
2. We were expiermenting.
3. We couldn't find anything else that would work.
None of us really like heavy metal but we'll use it if it works.
15 October 2005, 16:14 UTC#19
Just use rap even if you don't like it it ahs a strong steady beat makes it perfect in my opinon.
