Thats a kickass bundle.
22 September 2005, 14:32 UTC#14
thing I dont like about sony is how they make their camera to suit their products I.e they make the lense size obscure so that only sony lenses will fit it...and the panasonic lense is better than the sony....and the options are more user friendly and easily accessible on the panasonic
plus it's based on personal preference...
but tell me, what makes sony better than panasonic ?
and obviously a basic 3ccd is no where near as comparable to a HD cam...
that's like saying "man your toyota is crap you should get a ferrari"

first off sony cameras have a far better low lighting picture than others (without night vision) secondly I have never ever had any sort of screen issues with my sony but I hear panasonic's fucking up all the time.. also sony's steady shot is the best on the market and as far as their lenses go I have a sony with a 37mm lens.. wich is one of the most common sizses around so im not sure what youre talkin about.. perhaps your compareing to a 400-600 dollar sony wich id never buy but buy a good sony and it will own all..
22 September 2005, 14:49 UTC#16
those are good points...I haven't used the 3ccd sonys only the panasonic...but I use to have a sony and it was good but I'm going to get a panasonic because they are the cheapest 3ccd camera and they look really good with awesome specs...but obviously this isn't comparable to a vx2100...but it's good for now
22 September 2005, 14:49 UTC#17

this is a conclusion on the panasonic 3ccd I'm getting soon...the gs400
(taken from camcorderinfo.com)
The Panasonic PV-GS400 is the best camcorder value I've ever reviewed. Whoever designed this camcorder, and any engineers who worked on it, deserve a raise. (That's to you, Matsushita). Of course, there are camcorders from pro divisions that beat the PV-GS400; however, they certainly don't offer anything close to the value that the PV-GS400 does. The only other consumer camcorder on the market today which offers better features and quality is Sony's DCR-VX2100, which costs $2,300!
The PV-GS400 unquestionably beats Sony's 3 CCD DCR-HC1000. When Sony replaced the DCR-TRV950 with the DCR-HC1000, they forced all manual control into the touch screen and stripped it of many of the features which made the DCR-TRV950 a solid camcorder. Although it's $200 - $300 less, the PV-GS400 offers better manual control and is unquestionably a better value in my mind. Although the Canon GL2 offers much stiffer competition, the PV-GS400 includes more features and is still a much better deal.
I certainly recommend the PV-GS400. It offers amazing video, amazing manual control, and a bunch of other useful features which would help any videographer to shoot great video. I loved the PV-DV953, and I love the PV-GS400 even more. Although there are a few camcorders which were recently released this summer, I can confidently say that the PV-GS400 is the best value on the market today.
The Panasonic PV-GS400 is a model of excellent camcorder design and engineering. Although we can't make an official announcement until we've looked at a few more camcorders, I would say that Panasonic PV-GS400 is far ahead in the competition to be the rated as the CamcorderInfo.com SuperCam of 2004 - representing excellence in camcorders
sounds pretty kickass to me...

23 September 2005, 07:16 UTC#22

23 September 2005, 07:22 UTC#23
That's a nice camera, if I upgraded from my camera I have already I'd probably get this because that night mode sounds so good

Yeah, my sony cam needs 25mm - 37mm step ring to use my fisheye, it looks ridiculous.
23 September 2005, 07:50 UTC#25
it took me months to find a stepping ring for my fisheye
but stepping rings are good, it gives it a slightly higher wider conversion

Panasonic is good...

I came really close to buying one of these cams off ebay brand new for $1500. I was mainly attracted to the cam for its nighvision feature, something not very common in 3ccd cams. So I did about a dozen hours of research on it and found saw this
QUOTE
Super Night Shooting mode essentially drops the shutter speed so that more light reached the CCDs. It yields bright images but anything in motion is severely blurred so the value of this function might be minimal.
Ive used non-sony cameras in the past that lower the shutter speed in order to gain light and I hate it. It looks like shit. Unless you can keep the cam perfectly still, it useless.
Ive learned that only Sony has exceptable nightvision features, and Ive also recently learned that they finally offer a 3ccd cam with the nighshot feautre - the pc1000. So Im gonna get one those instead. But if you get a chance, test out the nighmode on one of those dvc30s and let me know how it looks.
EDIT - gay, I was mislead. The pc1000 doesnt offer the night shot feature. That really pisses me off. I'll forever be in search of a 3ccd nighvision cam. (its for the hidden cam porn stuff)

I'm really thinking about getting this cam. I can get it for slightly under $1500...which is a full $700 cheaper than a vx2100. I know the vx2100 is better no doubt, but I only have $1800 right now. I dont know if the vx2100 is actually worth all the extra money. Ive never used the dvc30 so Im skeptical. All that I really care about is that it does well in low light conditions. And also if the nightshot is any good.
Rob have you tested out the nightshot? Is it shitty like it said in the review that I quoted?
edit - Brent, you said your mom works for Sony. Any chance you could hook me up with some sort of discount??
31 December 2005, 06:30 UTC#29
The super night shot mode is okay if you're willing to sacrifice a few frames per second. All it does is take in extra light over a longer period of time, so the frame rate is less which is hardly noticable if it drops to about 20 (and can get some great results depending on the light). However if it's really dark and you need a lot of light, it will look shit as the frame rate is choppy and motion is blurry.
If you know how to compensate exposure, it can be a good feature.
