does anybody know of any good programs for creating animated gif images from either .avi or from a bunch of still pictures?

Brent,
download virtual dub.
Open the movie in Virtual dub.
Select the area for the gif.
Save as image sequence.
Open in imageready as frames.
Make the gif.
Save optimized as.
Talk to me on MSN if you get stuck.

Nah, it often rejects haxed files (e,g downloaded shizzle)
