How are two scenes from ‘The Sixth Sense’ presented in order to maintain the audience’s belief that Malcolm Crow is alive? How important are these two scenes to the film as a whole?

‘The Sixth Sense’ is a modern horror film directed by M. Night Shyamalan. In this film you are led to believe that the lead actor- ‘Malcolm Crowe’ has survived a shooting at the start of the film, and is working as a children psychologist. His main role in the film is assessing and helping a young boy- ‘Cole Sear’, who believes he can see dead people. As the story moves on you find out how this ‘sixth sense’ that Cole has interacts and interferes with his daily life, and his social well-being. And, after a recorded interview Malcolm holds with Cole, Malcolm finds out that Cole really can see ‘ghosts’ or dead people. Towards the end of the film Cole gets the chance to try and make use of his ‘gift’. He talks to one of the ‘dead people’, and using what she gives him, he manages to solve a murder. After an emotional summit of the film where Malcolm no longer needs to see him, and his Mum knows for a fact that he can see ghosts, A massive twist in the story occurs. Malcolm finds out that he is also one of these ghosts, and did not really survive the shooting at the start of the film. This is evident as the story comes back to some quotes that Cole has said earlier in the story to back this up.

As a horror story this film is quite unusual. It doesn’t have massive amounts of gross or freakish scenes, but it is more of a psychological thriller, that relies on you to perhaps watch the movie more than once to fully understand. Yet, it does have its heart- raising moments, as well as the ever- present ‘ghost’ theme to it. But, as I have said, this film is more directed at affecting the viewer’s mental psyche, rather than initial fright or actions.

Horror films generally do not fit to the model set by ‘the sixth sense’.
