Debug software must be burned to proprietarily designed optical discs (called, simply, Nintendo Reader discs) and, as every GameCube developer will tell you, burning new code over and over and over again to these discs can become expensive, not to mention time consuming. With that in mind, Nintendo created yet another alternative for software houses working on GameCube titles: a debug unit that reads hard drives.
