I just bought a new computer with a DVD burner. I paid $800 for the tower which contained no user manual (how sweet). The first disk I used I only recorded an 8 second clip just to see how it worked. I tried recording over it and got the message "could not be erased". Can you not erase over something you already recorded like vhs? Just curious.

if its re-writable you can, but if it isnt you cant record over it.

yeah, if you wanna do that, get blank cd-rw's, but not many dvd players will read them.

According to the front of the tower it says "DVD+RW/CD-RW". Does the "+" mean I should be able to rewrite over DVD and the "-" mean I can't for CD's? God I must be stupid!

its not a problem with your tower, its the discs. for you to be able to use them multiple times the discs need to be dvd-rw.

when you buy them, make sure you buy dvd+rw, not -, least for me, they dont work.
the +'s work fine though

Thanks again guys for your help. The discs I bought were DVD-R and should be reusable so I guess I screwed up somehow. You did answer another question for me though, I tried playing the disc in two different dvd players and neither one worked but works fine when played on my Playstation. So I guess in the future I'll only buy +.

DVD-R isnt reusable you want DVD-RW. and you probably didnt make the dvd correct. which programme are you using to burn the dvd to disc?

Damn MADE! Thanks again for your words of wisdom (DVD-R vs DVD-RW). When I inserted a blank disc, InterVideo WINDVD popped up so I guess I'm using that one.

DVD-R's can only be written on, and as soon as they are finished writing and buffering. Thats it. To my knowledge you cant reformat a dvd-r.
DVD-RW's can be written, and formated to allow data in the future to be added. And they can be reformated to be completley wiped clean.
You shuld of just asked the dudes at walmart or wherever you bought em. Or you shuld of just read the back of the disk case. Anywho. Now you know.

Thanks smith.O and another question....When I went to buy this computer I was mainly interested in purchasing one with a dvd burner. Knowing very little about them, I wound up buying a Compaq Presario which so far I'm pretty happy with. Returning to Office Depot to buy dvd discs I now notice that the computer I bought says DVD-writer but other computers they sell say DVD-and +. Does this mean that I can only use - discs?
