Well basically I need to free up some space on my pc as I have alot of fooatage in full .avi quality.
So the footage I won't really need for say if we ever make a dvd or something, im gonna covert what I footage I will never use for a dvd from .avi to .wmv. so the file size is smaller, and then back up the .wmv footage to dvd, for later use or whatever
Now my question, incase I need the .wmv footage, back into full .avi quality for some reason, I'm pretty sure there are programmes where you can then convert .wmv back to .avi quality, and I really wan't to no; how well does this work? is the quality as good as the original .avi quality? and how does it work, and how well does it actually work?

very good question and I would LOVE to know the same answer. We have soo much footage that the avi's would fill both my 40 and 80 gig hd. I Wanna know how to convert it to a wmv the stuff im not using and then convert it back to full quality avi when I decided to make one eventually. I would hate to delete it and then go through all tapes again and capture it again.

I'm going to need about 5 blank dvd's, at least, for .avi format. I need a lot of footage onto dvd, in .wmv, so then if I need it in .avi again, I can convert back.
but as someone already said that it wont be as good quality as it once was, when converted back from .wmv.

Get an external hardrive, or a slave drive...seems like you need one

back it up on to tha dv tape, its so much easyer and it saves the quality

Just import it into Windows Movie Maker and save the movie file. It'll save as .wmv, and you'll still have the .avi files, unaffected.

google something like "wmv to avi" and im sure youll find it!

I use it, the quality gets a bit worse but not much.

If your .avi footage is only taking 5 dvd's, don't bother converting it to wmv, that's just a waste of time and you'll regret it. 5 dvd's isn't that much..

convert them to mpeg files...quality is just as good maybe a little worse but the file size is much smaller than an avi file.
