Hd Tapes

I was wondering how many of you, who use HD cams, use tapes that are ment for hdv and how many just use dv tapes for hdv recording. And if there is a big difference between the two.

HD tapes make it a lot easier to record videos over 2 seconds long. This is really useful if you're looking to distribute eg youtube. Hope this helps, welcome to the forums.

I have an HC7 and I use sony HD tapes and standard-definition DV tapes. I record all footage in HDV and down-convert, but recording HDV on a miniDV tape is fine because they use the same bitrate.

If you record HDV to DV tapes and try to capture HD in Premiere or whatever editing software you're using there will be significantly more drop-outs in the footage, not to mention not being true HD footage because the compression rate is just going to be too much so you wont get a high level of quality in scenes which have lots of detail in them.

So mur.

What I´ve read from other sources, I thought that drop outs should be visible even if you down-convert it, because the original data on the tape is allready broken.

Also I doubt that it wouldnt be true HDV because tapes wont change how the camera writes the ones and zeros to it. If the tape cant handle the writing, it shows as a drop out. Not in missing details. Just like errors in writing cd´s.

edit: have you got lots of drop outs? And how bad are they? I read somewhere that its 15 frames that it usually affects?

Well I capture in Premiere CS3 and there when capturing it will tell you how many drop outs there are and I don't get any. :S

I think it's just frowned upon because it will fuck up the heads.

eedit#2: hd tapes are damn expensive in finland. Actually one of the cheapest webshops (when it comes to camcorder stuff) says literrally that the hd tapes are damn expensive

Yeah, what I´ve read the drop outs occur really rarely and HD tapes are pretty much marketing gimmick. But on proffesional field where you cant afford to lose 15 frames, they dont take cahnces and buy the HD tapes just to be sure.

I just bought 15 HD tapes because I found a good deal for like £20. They must have been stolen, but they were still sealed and work perfect.

Tapes seem to be way cheaper in the states, meh dont have a credit card so wont be ordering any. And should probably check if there is any differences in the tapes because of the different tv-format.

HD tapes are waste of money. Theres no real difference. Dont waste your money.

Been using hdv cams for 2 years, never noticed a difference in tapes.

iv lost valuable footage shooting on standard mini dv, its only happened on twice for me but both times it was on an SD tape.

never had drop outs or lost footage on an hdv tape.

So are they better, yes, are they worth it, probably not.

Truth. I've never seen a difference.

The HDV tapes are better quality (long lasting) and mainly serves to prevent dropouts, so it's really more of a just in-case thing.

If you can get HDV tapes cheap, DO IT. If not, don't worry about it. Just make sure you use head cleaners. ;D

are dropouts commen in HDV cameras? I noticed a dropout on some footage I captured and I havnt got round to recapturing it, so is it on the tape? I use minidv because I cant aford HDV tapes and didnt think their was a real diffrence. just a gimmick to make so much money for a tape.

HD footage on a standard-definition miniDV tape is more likely to have dropouts... whether it be a tiny bit more likely I dunno.

What I´ve read drop outs are more common with SD tapes, but still rare. When recording in HDV the impact of drop out is bigger (15 frames instead of one or two), because HDV is compressed format it instantly affects lots of frames.

edit: drop outs can occur in capturing as well, so its not neccesary the tape.
