For a while now I've wanted a HD camera to use, mainly for the future but for now too but anyway I want something that will be good for documentaries, movies and the normal HG stuff, does anyone have any recommendations?

For a long time I have wanted a HDR-FX1 after previously wanting a VX2100 then I thought I may aswell get a HD one as it will be good for future use too.

Basically I want to move up the scale to HD, im not made of money and could probably afford something upto about £1000ish.

I was looking at the HC7 after Tom mentioned it in another thread and it seems alright but does anyone have any other cams they think would be good so I can compare? (preferably with nightshot and a mic input)

So a HDR-FX1 is completely out of the question?

It'd be an amazing camera.

If you're looking for a HD Sony at a decent price for the best quality you definately want the HDR-HC7. Canon and Panasonic are shit, remember that. :)

HC7 is 18 times better than the HC5.

It has a larger ClearVID CMOS sensor which allows for stills up 6.1MP and Dual Record stills of 4.6MP, compared to the HC5 which is capable of taking 4MP stills in still mode and 2.3MP stills in Dual Record mode.

The HC7 also has a mic and headphone jack and an assignable dial. The dial is capable of controlling exposure, AE shift, white balance shift, and focus.

The layout is alot sexier too.

Canon HV 20. Although consumer in marketing, very popular for indie filmmakers now.

Yeah, get a Panasonic HVX-200. It's like the VariCam (variable frame rates) and the Cinealta (can record in 1080/24p, 30p, and 60p). It's about $6000, but I've seen some people sell them for much cheaper. It's worth the money.

One of the only reasons why I don't like the FX1 is because is doesn't have any XLR ports.

Dont get FX1. Get z1, has XLR ports, underscan and other very vital things. There basically identical, but its worth extra money for XLR ports alone.

When you get into HDV teritory circa is most certainly wrong.

Canon have the best HDV camera on the market, and benefit from interchangable lenses etc.
