most people take away a different understanding of the film..
my understanding is that its about time travel, and Donnie figures all this out (with the help of the guy in the costume) and desides to save the girl he loves, the one who gets run over, he must die. There for going back in time and staying in bed.

another understanding is that the life we see when he gets out of bed, is the life he could of had, shown to him by the Rabbit man, as if it was one long dream.

but I prefer the first one

Here is my take on the film.

Donnie was going to die, no way around it.

Now be it god, or some unknown supernatural force spares donnies life and created an alternate reality for him, problem is, it only lasts 28 days.

During the time, through franks help (not real frank, but the entity that took franks form) Donnie learns about true love, physically and emotionally, learns about great loss and sorrow, and the world around him is exposed.

The douchebag at the school is a pedophile, the girl at school really likes him, sparkle motion goes on to big things, his sister getting accepted in college, and more. All things he never would have known had he just died.

He still has to die alone, however he now dies with a much better understanding of the world.

It was a really long dream.

When he wakes up he dies from the shit he supposedly missed.

The movie sucked anyway. Its just kewl to like it.
