Hey, enough of the caveman like arguing, serious conversation and discussion on this topic dagnabbit!

Back to topic

This discussion brings up the philosophical question, If you could turn off your pain receptors, would you?

Would you be willing to give up your warning instincts? For our way of life, it would certainly have its advantages, however its pain that lets us know that hot things are hot so we dont burn the shit out of ourselves, its pain that keeps us from going past our limits.

Would it be worth it?

yes serious discussion time...
how cool would a of homegrown budist monks be?

and to leroy, no, the pain, the reaction make a video worth watching
if you hit someone in the face with a hammer, yeah its hardcore, but if e just shrugs it off it would just ruin the whole video

Flynn makes a good point - it would basically eliminate the talent side of stunts (yes, stunts are a talent in themselves). If just anyone could do the stuff that we do - they would. Sure, a lot of people try, but the people that excel at it, that are true stuntmen, have a lot of talent. Without the pain aspect and the ability to deal with the pain better than most people, then what we do wouldn't be popular at all. It'd be pretty boring and common.

It's the extremity we go to in the name of entertainment that goes beyond just reality and showcases the harsher parts of it. Pain is one of the toughest parts of being human, and we invite it and invoke it like a game. To just turn off our receptors of pain would be useful, yes. But, it'd really take away our innate talents and abilities. So, no, I wouldn't do away with it.

It would be a great comfort to be able to do that though. And no doubt it would broaden our little community.

Haha sorry for the hammered off topicness. Turning off pain receptors would be really dangerous and irresponsible, just because you can't feel pain doesn't mean the cause of the pain won't affect you, fair shout you guys are saying the pain may make you feel worse than you actually are and may just make everything seem worse but the injuries can still kill or really fuck you up if not treated. Pain is our alarm bell to sort out what's wrong with us I think.

Say if I never felt the pain in my knee which caused me to have my operation on it. If I didn't know it hurt I'd never know there was something wrong with me and it would have got worse and worse and I would probably eventually be unable to walk as my knee would be collapsing all the time. Or if when I had meningitis if I couldn't have felt the pain it would have been lovely but I wouldn't have known I was ill and I woulda died.

If we had the ability to turn off our pain receptors I personally think it would be irresponsible to one's own welfare to do so.

It is possible to be born without the capacity to feel pain. I believe there was a documentary about some kid with the condition. The first his parents ever realized is when they found him, a toddler, literally cooking his hand on the stove, without a care in the world.

He had to have all kinds of therapy and lessons to teach him what you can and can't do; because to him, if it doesn't kill him it's totally fine. It was kind of creepy.

That's crazy, but I heard about that! I couldn't imagine it. He'd be the best at stunts. Or police work. I bet he'd be like Robocop.

its called "junk" ive heard of it too, but its actually an awful thing to have. the kids litterally bite there tounges off at night because they dont feel what there doing. if they were to be shot they wouldnt feel it and they wouldnt get the correct treatment for it and they normally die young because of these things

I actually worked with a guy who had no feeling in his skin, or flesh it would seem. He worked as a tree lopper, he once was up a tree and cut himself with a chainsaw.. like a massive wound to his arm and didnt notice. Another time his son found him passed out in his bath tub with blood everywhere from some crazy wound.. he nearly bled out completely.
It's kinda bad ass, but it seems that not only do you not feel the pain, you don't act the right way towards injury.

Man this is a deeeeep thread, I got so hammered last night and I shut my penis in a freezer door for a laugh, it hurt, but not as much as it would when im sober, so my question is...
Does alcohol ACTUALLY affect the pain receptors and if so, why doesn't everyone get drunk and do better stunts?!? lol

Alcohol really just inhibits all of the senses. It slows your response time and just overall dulls everything for you physically. Being drunk definitely will help you out when doing stunts, at least from a pain standpoint, definitely not from an execution view though.

I'll leave it to the more experienced/smarter to give you the exact medical reasoning for it. But, that's the very basic explanation.

Also when you like fall over when you're pissed you're completely relaxed and that's why the falls will normally just be walked away from haha when you're sober and you fall you stiffen as a reaction this will mean a more painful fall, drunks just relax and don't hurt.

normally I don't do stunt when I'm drunk. big ones at least. I like being aware of all my surroundings and etc. besides, the whole pain/adrenaline thing is why I do stunts in the first place.

No seriously, when you can come up with an insult of your own get back to me. Until then, wallow in your lack of creativity and continue brown nosing.
