Possible rare LSD overdose in Cotton death

Martin Cotton II had a potentially lethal dose of LSD in his system when he died in custody on Aug. 9, according to a toxicology report released Thursday.

Toxicology tests done by Central Valley Toxicology in Fresno show Cotton had 10.6 nanograms of LSD per milliliter of blood in his system, 10 times what is considered potentially toxic and twice what is considered potentially fatal, according to Humboldt County Coroner Frank Jager.

The official cause of death will be determined by Ken Falconer, the doctor who performed Cotton's autopsy, and it will probably be released next week, Jager said.

”Since I've been coroner here, I've never seen someone overdose on LSD, so this is pretty unusual, if that's what it is,” Jager said. “It's just not very common. I don't know how he got that much in his system.”

Craig Hill, senior program manager for Mental Health Branch Dual Recovery Programs, said LSD is rare in Humboldt County, and overdoses are exceptionally rare anywhere.

”There's been possibly eight cases of overdose ever, and all of those are controversial at best,” Hill said, but added that he'd never heard of a dose as high as the one reportedly in Cotton's system. “Just about everything we know about LSD goes out the window because of how much he had on board.”

Cotton died in custody just hours after being involved in several altercations in front of the Eureka Rescue Mission, including one with Eureka police officers. From many accounts, Cotton was agitated and combative from the moment he arrived at the mission.

The Eureka Police Department was criticized by some in the ensuing weeks for not taking Cotton directly to the hospital after the altercation. Some have also alleged that officers on the scene used excessive force.

In a statement released Thursday, Eureka Police Chief Garr Nielsen said while Cotton's death was tragic, the toxicology report reaffirms his view that his officers acted appropriately given the situation.

”In this particular case, Mr. Cotton was so highly impaired and his actions so violent that it was impossible for law enforcement to subdue him peacefully,” Nielsen said in the statement.

There's only been like 8 or 9 recorded cases of people ODing from LSD, but what he took is a fucking crazy amount, I can't imagine what sort of state this guy must've been in. He probably doesn't even realise he's dead.

Holy shit....that's a lot of fucking acid, he must have just been drinking pure, undiluted LSD it in liquid form to have gotten that much in his system. I can't even imagine how hardcore he must have been tripping when he kicked the bucket, considering how upsetting the feeling that you're going to die can be when tripping even moderately hard, and that he was actually dying while completely out of his fucking mind on acid. Very interesting, thanks for posting this Kane.

I don't know a lot about Acid but from what I hear, if the Acid is made right you should just increase the length of your trip by taking more of it.

The article doesn't say that it is rare for people to die while under the influence of LSD, as it significantly impairs your judgement by its distortion of your perception of reality, and a person under the influence of the drug could certainly encounter death in a variety of ways brought on by such impairment. What it actually states is that it is very rare to hear of a fatal overdose of LSD, considering the relatively large amount of the substance one is required to ingest in order to OD in comparison to the amount required for one trip (~200 - 400 micrograms). As far as taking more LSD in order to extend a trip, this is effective up to a point, but as with most drugs tolerence does build up rather quickly, requiring more and more to continue tripping as hard as after the initial ingestion of the drug. Fatal overdoses may be much more common now than in decades past when most acid available was pure LSD, considering that today there is a lot of dirty acid on the streets (especially around here, which is why I never buy any locally) made from bullshit like strychnine found in rat poison, as well as toxic chemicals like windex, draino, and others that foolish basement chemists throw in to make a quick buck. This dirty acid often does not constitute actual LSD, which is the chemical discussed in this article, and thus cases of overdoses on these bullshit hits of acid have most likely been ommited from this article, otherwise the number of fatal overdoses cited would probably be considerably higher.

so what your saying is more people die from doing the drug and then like stabbing themselves or what ever, but its rare to actually overdose on it. which I didnt know because I thought one hit could fuck you up so bad that you can die or rot your brain.

Correct, the media has demonized LSD to a rediculous extent since the late 1960s, in reality the drug's real danger is to your mental health rather than physical. This stems from LSD's ability to bring latent mental problems to light, however, rather than actually causing them in the majority of cases. Basically, if psychological problems like schizophrenia run in your family or you have unresolved issues personally, it's probably not a good idea to use the drug. If you're a fairly stable individual though, and you have a reliable source for clean acid (as in actual LSD), its really one of the safest drugs you can use.

with LSD ive heard that even if you do it once, a trip can come back at any ceartain time, say 20 years later. because the LSD stays in your body and in the spinal cord. and one funny movement can cause a trip to reoccur. is this true/common?

I've heard the same thing, but I'm pretty sure it's propaganda to be honest.

I wouldn't doubt it though.

If it is I think it's something to do with the fact LSD is so potent, it gets ingested into fatty acids in your body, and when these acids are digested when you need them (especially if you're losing weight) you can become prone to what are similar to after trips.

Or just do as much LSD as you want and then never lose weight or put yourself in a situation in which those acids would need to be digested.

Although my way is very unhealthy
