Help With Paint Brush

Whenever I try and paint over something with the paint brush, it only colours the underneath, so I can't do what I want to right now. Is there some setting I've changed or am I just retarded?

Are you on the right layer? goto Window>Layers and click on the one containing the stuff you want to paint on. :-)

If your using photoshop it sounds like u are painting onto a layer thats behind the layer which has the thing your trying to paint on to, so yes in short u r retarded.

I'm on the right layer, but the paint comes up behind the image I have on the layer.
I'm trying to draw onto this picture, but it only comes up on the background of the layer and not onto the actual object

It was off a stock site with no usage restrictions. It's only not working when I use white to colour over it, even though I got rid of the white background

look up near the top tool bar. find mode. check that it doesn't say behind.
