I'm looking for a program to convert AVI files to MPEG, WMV and so on easily. Obviously has to be free. What do you use?

If we were to convert avi files to wmv would there be a significant drop in quality or would it be roughly the same?
Getting sick of having to upload stuff on youtube as mpegs, the quality just isn't cutting it, avi files are great in quality but they're way too big.
