POLICE investigating an alleged attack with a brick on a four-year-old boy, which left him with a fractured skull, last night arrested an 11-year- old boy on suspicion of assault, writes Gareth Walsh.
Part of Charlie Davis’s ear was hanging off when he was found in a pool of blood by a couple out walking close to his home near Hull.
The older boy was interviewed by detectives and released on police bail to allow officers to make further inquiries into the incident.
Earlier, police emphasised they had not yet been able to interview Charlie and were keeping an “open mind” about how the attack happened. They hope to take a statement from him later today.
Police said they were investigating reports that Charlie was attacked by an older child.
They said there was no evidence to back up initial reports that he had been dragged 200 yards by his attacker and then tied to a tree.
A spokeswoman said: “It is currently unclear how the child got to the area. He may have gone of his own accord, he might have been chased there or he may have been taken by someone against his will. At this stage police do not know what happened and are keeping an open mind.”
Last night Charlie was recovering after undergoing reconstructive surgery at Hull royal infirmary to repair cartilage damage in his ear. A scan has revealed no brain damage though he has sustained a fracture to the lower base of his skull.
The scene of the attack, which happened on Thursday, is between a railway line and a housing estate, about 200 yards from the boy’s home in Hessle, close to the Humber bridge.
Charlie’s sister Sammy, 18, said: “It was awful. The couple who found him carried him back and they were covered in blood.
“My mum was screaming. She was in a really bad way.”
She said Charlie had a swollen mouth, his teeth appeared to be loose, and she believed he had been kicked in the mouth.
Charlie’s mother Susan said the whole family was in shock.
Police will use a specially trained officer to tease details from Charlie at his hospital bedside.
