Nautical stars are used by the the russian mafia as indicators of power and time served in prison

from wikipedia regarding russian prison tattoos

"Stars - stars commonly represent time served; each point indicates a year served in jail or if stars are tattooed on knees it means you bow to no authority."

And if you have one on each shoulder thats also means autority

Edit : I just found this:

Disgruntled Asian Tattoo Artist Inks His Revenge

Reprinted from Sept. 2002 -- Pitt junior Brandon Smith wanted a tattoo that proclaimed his manliness, so he decided to get the Chinese characters for “strength” and “honor” on his chest. After 20 minutes under the needle of local tattoo artist Andy Sakai, he emerged with the symbol for “small penis” embedded in his flesh.

“I had it for months before I knew what it really meant,” Smith said.

“Then I went jogging through the Carnegie Mellon campus and a group of Asian kids started laughing and calling me ‘Shorty.’ That’s when I knew something was up.”

Sakai, an award-winning tattoo artist, was tired of seeing sacred Japanese words, symbols of his heritage, inked on random white people. So he used their blissful ignorance to make an everlasting statement. Any time acustomer came to Sakai’s home studio wanting Japanese tattooed on them, he modified it into a profane word or phrase.

“All these preppy sorority girls and suburban rich boys think they’re so cool ‘cause they have a tattoo with Japanese characters. But it doesn’t mean #%*/ to them!” Sakai said. “The dumbasses don’t even realize that I’ve written ‘slut’ or ‘pervert’ on their skin!”

In the last month, seven people unknowingly received explicit tattoos from the disgruntled artist. Kerri Baker, a Carlow College freshman, paid $50 to have the symbols for “beautiful goddess” etched above her belly button, but when she went into Szechuan Express Asian Noodle Shop sporting a bare midriff, the giggling employees explained to her that the tattoo really said, “Insert General Tso’s Chicken Here!”

“I don’t even like General Tso’s!” Baker sobbed. “I’m a vegetarian!”

Sakai doesn’t feel guilty about using hapless college students as canvases for his graffiti.

“I think I’m helping my fellow man by labeling all the stupid people in the world,” he explained. “It’s not a crime, it’s a public service.

Symbols on the back of a Pitt Student inked by Sakai (inset) were originally meant to say, "princess." They really say, "prostitute."

Thanks for speaking for me. You have no idea what a nautical star means anyway do you, so shut the fuck up.

I figured that it meant something other than a design...

Nautical Star History
Nautical stars were first tattooed on early sailors because they relied on the stars to find their way, therefore they always had a star to be with them and always knew where they were going in their own lives and at sea. It was kind of a sense of security and guidance.

QUOTE
Back in the day when being gay wasnt the thing to do, butch females would get the tattoo on the inside of their wrists so they could cover it up with a watch during the day and at night they could take off the watch and other dykes would know.

The bit about the nautical star being used as a signal for butch lesbians to find other lesbians in the 40's-60's is true. It fell out of favor in the late 60's with the advent of feminism, when lesbians became more openly visible. It was typically hidden under a watchband.

Got my first tat today. Mike in Kanji symbols.

*Waits for Liam to get back from holiday and tell Mike it actually means something else in Japanese*

I remember Liam showed me how to write my name in Japanese once and it looked nothing like that...Unless it was a different character set or something :\

Overall I think Japanese tattoos are kinda tacky and overdone.

There are many different symbols. This is Kanji, not japanese. There are tons, my dad works with a guy that is asian, not sure where from, but I had him draw me up a few different ones, I checked it online as well. It means Mike. I wouldn't trust a fucking anglefire site or anything like that. I make sure it is legit.

Sorry to say but I find that japanese style of writing cheezy... I seen it so many times...

I always thought the same but this tattoo looks pretty awesome.. Maybe it's the combination with the stars that does it

Yeah, I didn't want plain symbols so I added the hollow stars.

oh about Mikes tattoo I like the tattoo.. but I dont like the place that much.

QUOTE(kuffi @ Aug 24 2006, 06:30 AM)

how can it say MIKE if the M and E are the same? I like it tho but you should have placed it on your lower/underarm however the hell u call that.

What the fuck? M and the E? Anyways, I don't want to, at the moment, get anything that is going to be hard to cover up because I just got a possible management position and I don't want to risk that. Once I get into my carerr, it isn't going to matter.

QUOTE(Joe. @ Aug 24 2006, 12:05 PM)

You'll be lucky if that say's mike, japanese writing is so unreliable when translated into English. They wouldn't write your name in kanji, it would be in katakana. That knaji on your arm will probably mean a lot of things, completely unrealated to each other. Do you know japanese? Why did you choose that language?

Again, there are a lot of different symbols for Mike. I chose this one because the other ones were kinda boring. The japanese I didn't like, but the Kanji I loved. Refer to quote above. A friend drew it for me. So it's legit.

Yeah your tattoo has 2 stars that are exact the same. You say the tattoo says MIKE in some language. But that means the M & the E are the same in that language which is weird isn't it? Or do the 2 symbols just say Mike and are the stars for beginning and ending.. I have no fucking idea what Kanji is so fuck that :D

Im still gonna get a star with a filled border in green somewhere.. Jones post that pic of yours again.. I fucking loved it.

Is the translation a phonetic one or a literal one, because your name broken down will have a meaning in japanese. Does the tatoo sound like mike, or mean mike?
