Hey guys,
im really annoyed and would like some advice,

I asked my girlfriend but she dont edit videos so she cant really help.

I have for years liked editing video and do it on my computer and use my laptop for MSN and stuff while its rendering so that it dont freeze or go slow or whatever.

(Sorry if this is a bit long :-S)

Anyways...
I currently save all the videos captured in "My Videos" and then the saved ones in a folder called "Finals" and the ones that are saved but not definatly going to be used in a folder called "WMV Stuff" and I now have things all over the fucking place and its annoying me, I have about 4 different video editing programs installed which I need to get rid off, basically im gonna format it and start again but save all the video and stuff I need then put it on but I want to know this:

How do you guys organise your videos and other files so that you know where everything is, like in folders obviously but I mean like what called and stuff cos im getting really pissed off with everytime I go to do something its like, oh shit what is this? and I end up watching it all again and arghhhhhh  Image file not present in the recovered backup

Sorry if this makes no sence im just really annoyed and would like some advice from fellow HG'ers on where to store the videos n stuff.
Im thinking of using my other hard drive (20gb) but that means I cant really use it for backup then.

Anyway, please help its annoying me to fuck, it makes me not want to edit and I enjoy it loads usually so that cant be good.

Sorry again to write all this here that u probably dont care about but its worth a try.

Make folders for half finished stuff, and name it what the project is, like "Mixup1". And then do the same for finished stuff.

An alternative would be to make different folders for work produced in each different editing program. :)

I have a folder for semi-raw footage. all labeled accordingly.
another for finished stuff, avi and wmv renderings.
a folder for my old stuff, I soon hope to be able to convert all my hi8 tapes to minidv.

if im done with a video I delete the raw footage and jsut keep the finished. none of it really matters though becuase im just going to have to recapture it all when I have enough footage to make a full film.

Yeh, I use folders for unfinished and finished stuff I just never thought of making a folder for like each thing like trailer, mixup w/e

I might do that actually and make one for things to definalty go in the DVD aswell, would it make any difference if I stored it all on my other hard drive? would it like be better in anyway?
spose I could recover it easier if the computer crashed or sumthin

I have one folder called RAW for all my Raw footage which has subfolders named after my DV tapes ie SUMMER 2006/PROMO/XMAS etc
while editing it that single save file goes in the same folder

then I got a folder called Finished. with a subfolder called MAYBE where they go until im sure the are going up or are actually perfectly how I want them and they get taken out the sub folder and back into FINISHED folder.

if I download a video, I normally delete it after but if I love it ill save it under my folder HOMEGROWN GROUPS and OTHER

Yeah same. I have raw footage. Half finished projects and finished stuff all labelled to the name of what the project entails.

Your all gunna think im pretty pathetic..but I keep all the stuff I dont really want my parents seeing on my account on the .... I tihnk its the C drive... I have a "Raw Footage" Folder and a "Videos" folder..for all the edited mixups

then on my external I have the same..but just with more footage..

Trouble is..ive been uploading more...and its taking up loads of space..and I cant move it over to my external..because if I move it it will fuck up the half finished projects on adobe.

I'll show you how unorganised it is.......

This is my folder where I save the video files to (It used to be organised at one point)

And this is my "My Documents" folder which also used to be organised

Im gonna format it when I backed up all the shit I need. arghhh

I spose it is my fault but it still annoys me how I say every time I'll keep it tidy and I dont :-(

thats why I want a better computer but I just do not have the money lol

EDIT TO BEN: I will organise it again but I wanted to know a better way of doing it so that maybe I'll stick to it this time, im gonna put it all on my 20gb hard drive and use my 200gb for normal stuff like programs n shite.

N im gonna stick to it this time because I know how annoyed I get if I dont lol

Haha, I know how you feel man, I have to sort out my stuff every couple of days, as long as you keep doing it, it gets easier and easier.

I use two harddrives, both 180GB each...
When I used too capture on footage I saved it all into my D: Drive and had stuff like this:
So I'd go to D:>Footage and open up too all these folders; Finished Stuff, Prank Calls, Other, Old Footage, Skits, Stunts and WMV Footage.

Seriously, it's easier to just have one folder for ALL your rendered videos, I use "finished stuff" for mine, everything else is easily sorted as when I would capture on I'd just make sure I saved it too the right folder.

I usually capture on 2-3mins of footage, and name them stuff like; car run, crooke jump, random byw stuff and inside skit.... stuff that you can relate too, and it works out great.

But I don't have any footage on my computer no more but I still edit loadsa other stuff and just use a folder called "BaZ's folder" which is on my C: Drive, and then have these main folders inside BaZ's folder; music, vids, wrestling, pics, installers, games, recordings, recieved, complete, incomplete, and then they just open up into loads of other shit like;
Videos opens up into full movies, Homegrown, and other.
I used to have loads but if you just do it that way, it's all easy as hell to find, and all you have to remember is too find and save your stuff in the right folder each time, takes 2secs.

Anyways, enough rambling.........

Also, when I have a lil tab at the bottom of my desktop toolbar so I can easily navigate in my "BaZ's Folder" :D
