About a month ago it was purported that a popular player of the MMORPG World of Warcraft had died in real life. Obviously, in the geek community they feel the need to celebrate this in their own, ahem, "special" way, so a bunch of his friends from his guild within the game decided to hold a funeral. Within the game.
Now, for some background information, World of Warcraft works by splitting players into two factions that then procede to battle for dominance of the game world. So it was, news spread round the WoW message boards like wildfire, and pretty soon half the gaming community was to be in attendence. They picked a time and a spot, but sadly the spot happened to be a live combat zone, where this particular player liked to do most of his pwnzrozing, I guess.
Someone logs into the deceased's account, and gathers the congregation at the shore of a peaceful lake, and one of his friends begins typing some heartfelt words into the chat console as the digital sun sets. It was, I hear, a lovely service.
What happens next defies belief. A veritable army from the rival faction heard through the grape vine that there would be an amassing of players in one spot, all unarmed, all attending this guy's funeral. When they showed up the mourners didn't stand a chance. The event went down in game history as everyone was systematically slaughtered and the raiders left victorious.
The guild was to be later slammed for their actions and ostracized by the WoW community, but really, who gives a fuck, considering they filmed the whole thing?
Enjoy.
