Yeah some parts look pretty square in the bottom left, it's pretty good though man, aswell looks a little bit cartoony but for a first go that's awesome. Not trying to be a cunt with the negative things but you said you wanted the stuff that was wrong with it.

It this really your very first 3D-model? Nice work, mate.

Welcome to the amazing world of 3D!

Here are some tips I can give you to make this even better, some mistakes I made myself when I started 3D-modeling:

The upper scene is too bright! Try to use only one light first. You should read some tutorials about classic 3-point lighting of scenes. If you obey simple lighting rules, you'll see that your landscape will look way more vividly.
Put it the way you need to genertate the mood you want to create. Maybe put it a bit lower for more shadows.
The lower pic has too much pseudo-fog.
The texturing of the fractal landscape has several seams or whatever. It doesn't look right at some locations.

I know, it's hard to focus on one thing at a time if you have such a powerful tool with tons of options. :D
Look at photos of real landscapes. This will help you to make your work even better.

Keep it up! I'm looking forward to your next work!

For some inspiration you can have a look at some of my work-in-progress and finished renderings in the forum.

See you!

I've been doing graphics for quite awhile aswell... won't lie, never used light wave, but if you are doing backgrounds and scenery, I would reccomend Bryce, I believe they recently came out with Bryce 8, as for humans etc. you should get your hands on poser (believe highest is 4). With Bryce, you can create very adverse backgrounds, and it can also be used to create everyday simple objects. if you learn to create negative objects you can create images like for example, I created this pistol (kinda space agey I know... and btw the back ground was changed by someone with photoshop... I have all my original work on my desktop which is currently dead)

Anyway, to tell the truth its good to mess around and find your own style... oh and about that glitch, did you let the image fully render?

*EDIT* If you or anyone else want Bryce tips, id be happy to help. And remember the pistol was photoshoped... so the edges are choppy, look at the content as apposed to the edges

I used bryce once 3 years ago but it was very glitchy so I quit before doing anything really and I have poser 6 at my computer now but im gonna use houdini for all my 3d work from now on

houdini is fucking sick and coast like 17.000 usd :D

and I got it from a friend for free so yey for me!
