Task manager not working

im running windows XP, im using objectbar and objectdock.

Normally u cant crl+alt+del or right click on objectbar and open the task manager.
I cant do ethier.

any one got any ideas?

by the way, did you make me any desktops yet?

lol yeah made one.. but my pc is all buggered and cant close anything.. task manager isnt working.. not even when I restart the pc

humm, very strange, cos you can usually have multiple instances of it :s so yeah talk to gaz if he comes on.

You've got a trojan that's modified the task manager registry entry and disabled it. To fix this do the following:

* Open the registry editor, do this by going to start > run and type in "regedit.exe" (without the quotes) and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > System

* In the right-frame, double-click DisableTaskMgr and set it's value to 0


Edit: After doing that download spybot search and destroy and AVG free, run the scans to remove the trojans so this problem doesn't occur again.

yeah it is prob a Trojan like G said. I could if needed make a reg file for you to fix this. Most probs msconfig will not work? If both dont I can make a reg file for that too.

when I try and run it it says regedit is being used by another program :S:S:S:S

This trojans a tricky one. Try this;

Start > run

Paste this in the run box:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

something flashes then disapears after like a split second...

Try pasting this in the run box and then running that command I just told you, that should sort the problem:


REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

try running REGEDIT

RUN>REGEDIT

Sometimes the trojan will also stop this.

Best way is to run in safe mode as the trojan will not run there (As startup and others dont run)

still says another program is using it..

Do as I said. go to save mode

While booting hit F8 and it will give you a menu. just use safemode then do it

MMkai, try this.


Run gpedit.msc

Navigate to:

Administrative Templates > System > Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options > Remove Task Manager


Then double-click the Remove Task Manager option and set the policy to "Not Configured."

cant find it.. ill try safe mode.

done it in safe mode.. was already set to 0.. now back in normal mode gonna run spybot..
