Hydrogen Power
Without a power source for the future economy, it is possible that infrastructure would collapse and civilization would likely endure a post-industrial stone age. Estimates from leading scientists estimate that oil production will fall short of demand from the growing populations of the world sometime in the first half of the 21st century. Once demand exceeds production, prices will rise to unparalleled levels. Without the oil, gasoline couldn’t be made, and anything that uses new plastic couldn’t be manufactured. Recycled plastic could be used, but the amount of it would not last a long time. The other methods of generating power would be coal, nuclear, wind, hydroelectric, solar, and fuel cells. The majority of power is generated through coal power plants, which burn coal to turn turbines and create energy. Coal is not considered renewable, since it takes millions of years to form and is buried deep underground. Coal production is predicted to fall short of demand as more energy is needed and the current amount existing keeps decreasing. Without these main power sources, not enough power will be generated to supply the electric grid. The shortage of power isn’t the only problem with fossil fuels; the ozone is also being depleted from ongoing pollution created from power pants, automobiles, and fires around the world.
As the world’s nations consume colossal amounts of fossil fuels, developing countries are gaining the utilization of the internal combustion engine and construction power plants. With the increase in use, gaseous chemicals destroying the atmosphere, and the finite oil supply, an alternative that does not pollute must be established. Hydrogen fuel cells, with the hydrogen coming from clean energy sources, are a feasible solution to this budding predicament. Power from oil has many problems and needs to be addressed.
Hydrogen fuel cells create energy by combining hydrogen and oxygen. This process, called electrolysis, creates energy that can be used to power a motor. Current technology uses mainly fossil fuels, which are fuels that are derived from non-renewable sources, such as oil and coal.
The emissions caused by oil use are immense, but with hydrogen the amount is much lower. Depending on what method is used, either hydrogen and fuel cell, or hydrogen and engine, the amount will still be lower that gasoline engines. “Even if fueled with fossil fuels as a source of hydrogen, noxious emissions are orders of magnitude below those for conventional equipment†(“Fuel Cellsâ€). Using non-polluting power sources to make hydrogen would cause no emissions. “The largest apparent advantages are that it could be produced and consumed as cleanly using solar, wind and nuclear plants for electrolysis (“Hydrogen Vehicleâ€). According to the National Hydrogen Association, the amount of energy produced by hydrogen is about three times more than a comparable amount of gasoline and about seven times more than coal.
Gasoline engines emit carbon monoxide and a slew of other chemicals when they run. With hydrogen there are no harmful emissions since it does not burn the fuel. “In the car’s fuel cell hydrogen and oxygen are combined to produce electricity that runs the motor. There’s only one emission, water†(MacGillis A12). Since the only emission is clean, it does not send chemicals into the air; rather it can recycle the water for passengers of the vehicle, or be used to make more hydrogen. “The absence of combustion and moving parts, means that fuel cells can run continuously for long periods before servicing and are far less prone to breakdown†(“Fuel Cellsâ€).
Burning fossil fuels creates pollution. Pollution eats away at the ozone in the atmosphere, which allows UV rays to pass through. The UV rays can cause significant burns to the exposed animals and humans. The pollution in the atmosphere also builds up smog, acid rain, and chemicals in the air, which can cause respirator conditions in people. “The switch [to hydrogen powered vehicles] could prevent 3700 to 6400 deaths attributable to pollution in the U.S. each year†(Handwerk).†With the health of people, and the health of the planet at risk, fuel cells would clear up the problem, and improve the health of the world’s populations.
The majority of the US oil supply comes from the Middle East. The different conflicts can cause trading embargos. “The 1973 oil crisis began in earnest on October 17, 1973, when Arab members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), during the Yom Kippur War, announced that they would no longer ship petroleum to nations that had supported Israel in its conflict with Egypt—that is, to the United States and its allies in Western Europe†(1973 Oil Crisis). This caused massive price hikes and shortages all across the country. The 1973 Oil Crisis was a temporary problem, and it was limited to the U.S. and its allies. The problem of oil running out completely is not temporarily, it is permanent. Any oil that is naturally created would be made at such a slow rate that it would run out right away.
“President Bush […] proposed a federally funded program designed specifically to research how to produce, distribute, and store hydrogen for use in fuel cell vehicles. (Fuel).†With the government backing of hydrogen, the automobile and fuel companies are gradually pushed in the direction of fuel cells. “It’s more a matter of getting such a change going†(Handwerk). Many automobile makers are recognizing hydrogen powered vehicles as the future and are starting by implementing hybrids, which are vehicles that run on electricity and gasoline. There is also the issue of cost, since the technology is so new and is being researched extensively; the products value is extremely high. “Kazuo Okamoto, incoming head of Toyota’s research and development group, said in a public statement last week that the automaker hopes to reduce the cost of an HFC from today’s typical $1 million per vehicle to $50,000 by the year 2015†(Handwerk). Lowering the cost of the technology will help spur on sales and allow average people to buy the cars.
“Developing countries are shifting their focus to alternatives. Most agree that the logical path for the world’s vehicles eventually leads to fuel cells†(“Fuel Cell Futureâ€). The amount of people from those countries that have cars is drastically increasing along with the amount of emissions. They should instead use hydrogen powered vehicles that cause little or no damage to the environment.
“Fuel cell powered cars are currently being road tested on auto maker’s tracks. Fuel cell buses have hauled passengers in long-term tests on the streets of Vancouver and Chicago. Honda is already promoting its fuel cell car in a television commercial†(Cothran 178-183). Infrastructure for hydrogen vehicles would need to be implemented before mass production could begin. Buyers will want to be able to get hydrogen for the vehicle if they buy it, for this to happen some kind of delivery system needs to be created. “Since the turn of the millennium, filling stations offering hydrogen have been opened worldwide†(“Hydrogenâ€). With all the changes occurring, the solution remains to be fuel cells, the clean, non-polluting, method of creating energy.
Hydrogen fuel cells would be the main solution to the ever mounting problem of pollution and fossil fuels running out and without hydrogen power the supply of power would be too small to cultivate the growing populations of the world. To not make the move to newer energies now would create a situation where we would effectively be the unable to fix the problem before people would loose electricity and power to transport themselves. The toxins that rise from cars and power plants hurt the environment and cause many different diseases and abnormalities in humans and animals. The many different problems that are associated with oil would be solved with hydrogen power combined with other non-polluting sources. If nothing is done the atmosphere and the health of future inhabitants of this planet are at risk.
