Chef Quits 'South Park'

By ERIN CARLSON, Associated Press

Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

Good find man. I love South Park. He picked a weird time to call it quits though. I wonder how many more seasons of South Park they'll do.

Bastard! Chef was one of the better characters Image file not present in the recovered backup

...I wonder if they'll have an episode where they kill him off or say he moves away or something, and just not have him have any lines, so it won't matter if issac hayes quit. He should just suck it up and keep going though, it's easy money, and a lot of it. Oh sure he can be on a show while they break as many taboos as possible on national television, but when it comes to his own faith, he can't "stomach" to hear them make fun of it, even while the episode that poked fun at scientology was back in November and has already aired. I don't get it, as his name is already associated with it, he might think that quitting will make him appear to be a more respectable person in the eyes of fellow scientologists, but the fact that he waited around until now to quit instead of doing so immediately after hearing about the episode says more about his character than the simple fact that he quit. I think he was just in it for the money, and only quit to preserve what little respect people have left for a washed up old soul singer, which probably wasn't much to begin with.

What a douche bag. It's fine to insult and belittle thousands of other people/religions/beliefs but when it comes to something that affects him personally, it crosses a line? It's like saying, well, I guess you can call all Hispanics, Chinese, Korean, Japanese,Samoans,French,Africans,Germans,English,Australians and Vietnemese the racial slurs and insults, but mess with an American and you're going down!

What a tool.

why does everything have to do with religion?

I bet god and jesus have a special day for south park, just sit around their cloud tv and share each others skin to make bread for their meaty sandwiches and laugh their asses off.

I know I would.

Do you guys remember when one of the voice people for South Park committed suicide? It was around 6 years ago and at the time I didnt really watch the show, so I never noticed a difference in voices. She did the voices for Mrs. Cartman and Ms. Crabtree along with loads of others. How did they go about replacing her? Is there a big difference between the voices of the old Mrs. Cartman and the new Mrs. Cartman?

Chef was cool. But I don't think it will really make a difference.

They will likely bring a new chef to rip it out of the other one.

OH NOE u didnt insult scientology, the most bullshit "religion" ever cuz thats my religion u cannot insult it <3

apparently thats what it takes to cross a line. what a load of shit. good riddance isaac hayes, you're old and useless anyway.

Something tells me he's gonna realize he's an old black blues singer, and he's never gonna get another job.

He'll come back. And they'll let him. They love him.

...I love him...
