DVD +R & -R

As you know there are two types of non re-writable blank dvd disc you can buy, DVD+R and DVD-R.

However, apart from the price, what difference does this actually make? I have been told that +R works on mroe dvd players, and that dvd+r and dvd-r are each indivdually dvd player specific, so there is no worse/better disc type.

For instance. I burn a DVD+R, with all the encoded dvd vob files e.t.c. to a blank dvd in the correct directories. The DVD will play perfectly on my downstairs player, yet wont register at all on my upstairs player. Proffesionally authored DVD movies work on BOTH my players, so what's the difference?

Any help greatly appreciated, as this is always something I've wanted to know and it may be useful for people wanting to produce their own dvd's in the near future. Thanks.

DVD-R/RW Discs, work on almost/all new DVD models.
DVD+R/RW Discs, arn't as compatiable with as many DVD models.

IMO, DVD - R/RW are better..

They play on more DVD players, and if you have a DVD recorder.. they work more like a VHS Recorder.. they will just record on the part where the disc is at. As with a DVD + R/RW disc, it will just find any space on the disc to record on.

EDIT: There is no difference between the quality of the discs, if you wanted to know that, also.

Either way, I'd go with -R/RW Image file not present in the recovered backup

I'm pretty sure it's just recordable. But, RW means ReWritable.

There are three competing DVD Recording standards, DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW have pretty similiar features and are compatible with many standalone DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs while DVD-RAM has less DVD Player and DVD-ROM compatibility but better recording features.

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 80% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R and DVD-RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double sided 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R DL
DVD+R DL or called DVD+R9 is a Dual Layer writeable DVD+R. The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 computer GB* (called DVD-9) and dual layered double sides 15.9* computer GB (called dvd-18).

DVD-R DL
DVD-R DL or called DVD-R9 is a Dual Layer writeable DVD-R. The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 computer GB* (called DVD-9) and dual layered double sides 15.9* computer GB (called dvd-18).

DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM has the best recording features but it is not compatible with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players. Think more of it as a removable hard disk. DVD-RAM is usually used in some DVD Recorders.

Well I don't know. I've got both and I can't tell a difference at all. Maybe +R last longer?

Either way DVD+R are more expensive.

-'s are cheaper because they're in demand more as only weirdos buy +R's.

get a +r if you want to make DVD's not coasters.
