Editing, De-Interlacing, Compression Help!

Alright, I really need to get my shit straight and I need help from you guys, please no smart comments or anything.

I noticed, and I'm sure you all have, every video I release is always interlaced. I use Sony Vegas to edit my stuff and I always just export it as a mpg and open WMM and use that to compress it to a WMV. I dunno why so don't ask. I'm going to ask a few questions, hope you can all help.

1. What program should I use to De-Interlace films with?
Here below I have used raw footage from my friend skateboarding.

Original MPG - 5.77MB - 5 seconds long.
De-interlaced/Edited Down MPG - 9.65MB - 2 seconds long.

Why did the size go up in 4 MB's when I took off 3 seconds of footage. Did the De-interlacing part make the size higher? Can you notice a difference in them both, Does the de-interlaced film look better?

Also, In The De-Interlaced video it says Skate_de.mpg but it saves as Skate_de.avi. Why? If it's a avi for sure, then I understand why the file size is so big.

I used Adobe Premiere Pro to de-interlace.

2. What program should I Capture footage with?
I use Sony Vegas 6.0 to edit with but I cannot seem to capture footage with it. Everytime I try and It never plays smooth, It's always jumping and skips and audio doesn't match up. I use WMM to capture into wmv file since it's the easiest so far and that's really all I know right now. I have tried Premiere Pro and no luck with that either, Says my device isn't connected but with WMM it is. Weird.

3. What program should I Compress with?
Like I said, I save using Vegas into MPG and then I load it into WMM and I usually make the file 1.2-1.3 MP so the quality isn't shit, but the file size is high which sucks. How the can I get it so the file size isn't big but the quality isn't a shit?

4. If I am planning on making a DVD, would I use MPG or AVI?
I usually save a movie I make with 1 file as a MPG and another as a WMV so the WMV can be a internet version and MPG will be a full quality type of thing. Is this what I should do as a AVI will take up 800MB when a MPG will take up like 60MB. I really don't have that much space to be wasting on AVI's but if I have to then I will go get a external HD.

5. Is there a way to save MPG or WMV and not AVI with Adobe Premiere Pro?
I must be doing something wrong but when I am finished editing it, I right click the clip and go to Field or Frame Options and I click, "Always De-Interlace" And then click Ok. I go to File, Export and then it has "Movie, Audio, Frame, Export to DVD" and a few others. What should I click to save the file onto my PC? If I click Movie, It lets me save but as a AVI. I tried saving it as a mpg but it goes right to AVI. How can I make it a WMV or AVI? Can I Compress with Premiere Pro also?

I think that's all the questions I have for now, Hopefully someone will be nice enough to answer and not flame or anything. Thanks guys, I'm glad I can come here when I need help.

Premiere. Right click the clip, field options, deinterlace.

The reason it's a bigger file size is (I'm not 100% sure, but I think) that interlacing is a way of blending two frames together. When it's deinterlaced, the frames are split, making more frames bigger filesize.

2. What program should I Capture footage with?
Anything. I use premiere, but there's plenty of programs out there. Make sure you have a high spec pc, with no applications running in the background whilst capturing else you'll lose frames and fuck up the sync.

3. What program should I Compress with?
Depends what you're compressing it to. If you're publishing it as an online clip, then Premiere or any editing program would do.

4. If I am planning on making a DVD, would I use MPG or AVI?
Export it to Mpeg-2. This is the standard format for Adobe Encore - the best dvd making software.

5. Is there a way to save MPG or WMV and not AVI with Adobe Premiere Pro?
There is a plugin available called 'Adobe Media Centre' (can't remember if thats the right name), which when exporting allows you to select whether you want it in .wmv .mpg .mov etc.

Ok I can't answer them all, But I capture with veagas too, and I have had no problems at all, what are your capturing settings....?

Import your raw mpg into VD there. Select start and end points for the bit of footage you want using the home and end keys on your keyboard.

Select some form of video compression, divx for example.
Select what filters yo uwant, in your case deinterlace filter (built in).
File > save as AVI.

easy as shit.

I don't see why people do this. Just chuck your raw DV footage onto a dvd. You'd hate to have your harddrive fuck up and lose all of your footage.



And as for the plug in I'm not sure. I remember WKH was looking for it.
It probably skips and plays in slow motion cause 1) you're using a crap computer and youre in need of a better one or 2) you have other applications open that are draining cpu or harddrive resources.

It's useful for preediting the footage though, using filters and better encoding rates.

What if you loose the disk then? Using Divx at a setting of atleast 4000kbps won't make your footage loose any quality at all, and be like 1/8 of the original file size.
