Looking for a good camera

ok I just got my camera back from being fixed and it cam back worst and now my warntee thing is up so im selling it for 100$ I now have a job and have 1000$ I want to buy a new cam ive been looking at the Sony HDV 1080i Handycam for 1600$ and pansonic pvgs250 and 500 each for 1000$ should I get one of these cams or save some more money and get a different one?? help!

DVC30 or GL2 are pretty good. Don't bother with HDV cameras or those panasonic 3 chips if you can afford something better.

well I want a good cam I dont want to spend 1000 and have a not so good cam I rather save up to 2000 if I can.. if you had the money what would you get or what do you have?

Dont bother with anything from Panasonic unless its a DVC30 or DVX100. that GS series is total shit and at a $1000 each you would be getting ripped off.

Here is a general rule of thumb that everyone should attempt to follow:

Unless it's an extremely good deal, avoid CONSUMER cameras from ALL companies other than Sony.

Canon, JVC and Panasonic are good companies, but their low end cameras cannot compete with Sony's. If you want to buy from Canon, JVC, or Panasonic, save up and look at their PROSUMER cameras.

NOTE: Canon has a few exceptions in the consumer market but it's nothing to jump over.

I've used over 20 different Mini DV cameras during the past 5 years, both consumer and prosumer. Take my advice and save yourself the money.

With a budget like yours I highly reccomend you look into getting a used Sony TRV900 or 950. They've been discontinued so you wont be able to get this camera new.

It really is a great camera. Great picture, sound, and low light perforamce. It's light, somewhat small, and very affordable. This is my 2nd best all-around camera choice for under $2500. I've been using this camera for the past 3 years and absolutely love it. You should easily be able to find a used one in mint condition for a $1000.

My 1st choice is a vx2100. There is nothing out there under $2500 that can touch the vx2100. The vx2100 is one of the only 1/3rd inch 3ccd camera out there under $3000. All the other cameras use 1/4inch chips. I've used the vx2100 more than another camera and nothing has ever came close to impressing me as much. This camera will cost you $2200 new.

If you wanna fuck around with some more choice, the DVC30 ($1550) and PC1000 ($900) might be worth looking into...depending on your needs and how strict your budget is.

I do not recomend the Canon GL2. It's a decent camera, but you're absolutely better off paying $300 more for the vx2100. If the GL2 was a about $200 cheaper I'd probally recommend that, but at $1800 it just isnt worth it.

Good luck and be patient. Finding the right deal is the hard part. Hopefully you're decent at ebay'ing.

WEAK, if I had the money for a trv900, would you say I should go for that or something more expensive?

I don't plan on going professional at all and it'll probably just be used for filming homegrown and probably some concerts for bands.

Okay back on topic, if they still made the TRV950's, I would absolutely get one. They were a little over priced for such a small camera, but still well worth it. I believe they even made the 950's with touch screen LCD's. How fucking badass is that.

I got mine at circuit city, but it isn't a 3 chip. Just your average consumer Sony MiniDV Handycam.

Any sites that sell things for way lower and all the accessories cost twice as much as normal are usually a scam in one way or another. If you actually do get something from them it'll be a grey market piece of shit camera that comes with no accesories. I'm going by all the reviews I've read, but when there's tons of reviews and they're all the same thing, you tend to believe what they're saying.
