you're footage cleaning tips?

ok so this thread is mainly for the editors here who work hard at getting the final edits on point, we all have our own little editing tricks so id like help if you have any for this issue

we've got footage on 8mm tapes, HI8 tapes, Digital 8 Tapes & Mini DV tapes

they all have different looks and quality, now when mixing up in edits all the footage there will be drops in quality.

im wondering if you have any tips for cleaning them up so they look nice with mini dv quality? by setting colours,brightness,contast ect ect higher or lower (this is mainly for HI8 & 8MM)

I know afew groups have used these types before, im not looking to slap a big effect over the top so it covers up the dull'ness of it as I like the footage to look 'normalish'

Are you using vegas? It has some color correcting settings that might help.

nope im using pinnicle 9, its got all the settings I just dont have time to do it as the preview window is shit quality and always shows it brighter than it really is

so to find out the ture effect I need to export back to tape then go watch it on the tv, and when u have to do it every time u change 1 setting it gets annoying and time just dispears for hardly anything

It may be to do with the editing software that your using, Theo uses Premier Pro and edit with Mini-DV and Hi8, and if anything the Hi8 is better quality than the Mini-DV

Premier Pro is the best for quality\contrast\colour settings.. but since some are shit quality you may want to consider either lowering the quality to match or useing a blur on the pixelated video..

If you can be bothered, then try re-uploaded with a better quality firewire

pinnicle captures how its displayed on a tv, it isnt lowering the quality when being captured. HI8 shouldnt be nowhere as good as minidv...somthings wrong there im sure others will tell you that



I dont want to lower the quality of the high quality footage if thats what you're saying? that would beat the point of having a mini dv cam. but thanks im going to be editing in pinicle for this



its got nothing to do with the firewire. old cameras have worse quality than new cameras lol

Better quality firewire? It makes no difference man...they all upload in the same format, same compression....

I dont agree with pat about the hi8 camera being better quility.



But it seems to me as if I have better quality fire wire than theo ... Because when I upload the same footage on theos pc then mine .. The MB is lower on theos .. and the quility seems worse

Ben, it could depend on what your using to upload with, like Vegas or WMM, that could make a difference.. but it shouldn't, right? Plus different PCs could also make a difference.

I hope there isn't any better quality firewire's out there..

Add some effects to the footage to make it look less shitty. Like if the colors are all drug fucked looking, make it more black and whiteish.

best advice I can give is color correction stuff. I don't think you can make the actual footage better quality, so just use some contrast or b&w.

yeah thats what I had pland to do if no one came up with any help. it'll be cool. also fading into each clip I found helps as it dont jump quality that way

I know this might sound wierd but I like lower quality footage, as long as the framerate isnt shit it makes stuff look more gritty, real, and unplanned.

but id say maybe add a slight blur and sharpen, itll get rid of the blockyness. other then that I dont know what else u could do.

I use Mini DV's for a JVC cam and its poop..
Because it looks zoomed in and..
I cant find a wide screen or fish eye lens for it.

JVC cams are shit, they break so offten, get a snap-on lens that will fit it. ebay you can find some just keep checking

it clips on to the front of cameras, if it dont you can buy a step up ring too.
