Is it better to have a camera that writes to tapes or one which writes to DVD Discs?
The way I saw it was if it goes right onto disc it will be best quality with no fuss... Or is that not the case?

Im pretty sure what they say on the TV about DVD Camcorders is a bit over the top.
Obviously perfect quality, not too sure, but I remember WEAK saying its just a fab, which will soon blow over.. Go Mini-DV, although if your getting a new cam, get a HD Cam (High Definition Camcorder) as in a year or so all new TV's will have higher resolution and stuff. So will cams, so better keep up with the technology
EDIT: I guess I didnt really answer your question, Mini DV Tapes are better, IMO. From what ive heard anyways..

The one I was looking at is like an extra 100 where I can get the exact same with tapes for like 320...

I dont know anything really about DVD cameras. I assumed it was just fad and would soon pass just like MicroDV...but now more and more companies are pushing towards the DVD format. I wrote an article about this on my WS site the other day.
Cameras with hard drives are becoming more popular as well. It seems as though the MiniDV format is dying fast. Personally, I love MiniDV. I hate the idea of recording to a DVD because they can easily be scratched and ruined, and I hate hard-drive cameras beause I like my footage to be captured on a permanent device, not something completely digital. I'll stick with MiniDV as long as I can. I definitely will never go to DVD..

I think its just soemthing else on a cam that can go wrong.

id say about the same quality, but more of a hasal when editing, when you dump the footage it better cuz its all in little clips, not really capturing like tape. But on my computer, my camera captures to avi, and my friends DVD cam comes on as mpg and mpg clips usually slow down the editing and start to lag the program n shit.

syke recently bought a DVD camera, I havn't seen it yet but from what hes said it sounds pretty bad ass. And I would assume there would be no quality loss in transfering it to pc as you jsut rip the dvd? When I speak to him next ill ask and let you know.

There always seems to be issues when writing to my computer... is there anyway I could just write it full quality? Or does it always depend on connection speed?

MiniDV is the better option
As someone alluded to in another post, MiniDV is better for editing. MiniDV is compressed using "DV" compression which is a lot easier to work with than the MPEG-2 compression you get from a DVD cam.
edit: and what boner said. tapes are totally more convenient.

DVD camcorders are a waste of time. They are basically just a way to suck in consumers with the DVD buzzword. Plus most of them don't take regular size DVD-R's, they are a smaller size disc and are mosre expensive and not carried by a lot of electronics stores.

I feel totally the same man, good thing is minidv tapes and cams will drop in price
